Film directing is both an art and science. Author Tom Marcoux shows how you can become savvy with working with all kinds of people and then have the space to create an excellent feature film, short film or video for YouTube. This book reveals "21 Darkest Secrets" and then gives you the "countermeasures" so you're prepared to handle the tough situations that come up every day on a film set. And Marcoux reveals secrets so you effectively lead the various phases of film/video production: developing the screenplay, preproduction, production, and postproduction. He even provides some insights to fundraising, marketing and distribution. This is a must-read for novice and veteran filmmakers. From Dr. JoAnn Dahlkoetter

Very Helpful

Looking back on my experiences as a film maker there are times I really could have used this book. Easy to read this book gives you a list of "Darkest Secrets" or very helpful tips and lessons for different situations you may (or will) encounter in your film career. One that really hit home was "Darkest Secret #4: People Will Get Angry. Deal With It." This section shows how people get upset on the set and how to deal with it. For any director, that's one of the hardest lessons to learn and anger on the set is a common situation. Definitely worth it!

About the Author

Anne Newlands worked for twenty-seven years as an educator and researcher-writer at the National Gallery of Canada. She is the author of numerous books including Canadian Paintings, Prints and Drawings, Canadian Art: From Its Beginnings to 2000, Clarence Gagnon: An Introduction to His Life and Art, Emily Carr: An Introduction to Her Life and Art, and The Group of Seven and Tom Thomson: An Introduction. She is currently writing a book about the Quebec textile artist Mariette Rousseau-Vermette (1926-2006).

Introduction

In the 125 years since Clarence Gagnon was born in a little village north of Montreal, the appeal of his peaceful paintings of rural Quebec has endured, conjuring affection for the old traditions and visual splendour of the Laurentians and the Charlevoix region of eastern Quebec. Best known for his images of sun-filled winter landscapes and the colourful illustrations for Louis Hémon's novel, Maria Chapdelaine, Gagnon was also an award-winning printmaker, whose fascination with technical perfection and craftsmanship inspired experiments in printmaking and led him later to mix his own paints. A complex and multi-talented individual, Gagnon's varied interests, skills and passions frequently competed with the time for his art. As a passionate outdoorsman and a bon vivant, he filled his photo albums with images of fishing, skiing, hiking and sailing that all reflected his intense enthusiasm for nature. Despite the many years of living abroad, his love of the picturesque villages! and dramatic landscapes of the Charlevoix region fostered his interest in the domestic arts of the habitants. These people were descendants of French peasant farmers, and their geographical isolation perpetuated their adherence to traditions largely untouched by industrialization. Gagnon's friendship with them led to his active promotion of Quebec handicrafts, along with his contribution of designs and colour schemes to improve the quality of local products. "All art is fine art," he wrote, "and no art worthy of the name can lose caste by assisting the other arts."

His involvement in the 1920s with Eric Brown, Director of the National Gallery of Canada, and his association with some of the Group of Seven artists, enhanced his pride in his French-Canadian identity and reinforced the contributions of fellow Quebec artists to the story of Canadian art. Gagnon's astute observations of the life, art and politics that surrounded him are recorded in his abundant correspondence, giving us insights -- in both English and French -- into his personality and preparing us for the burst of eloquent speeches delivered later in life. Characterized by his friend the poet Duncan Campbell Scott as "an intense and untiring craftsman in whatever he undertook," Gagnon's concentrated "thoroughness" was balanced, as many others have also noted, by a spirit of optimism that similarly illuminated his art.

Love, love LOVE

This is my favorite of the series, and the most beautiful. These books keep me awake at night because as tired as I was, I couldn't wait to see what happened next. All the books are like that. This one left me in happy tears. Truly an amazing, wickedly twisted and talented writer that has quickly become my favorite.

Nick and Grace - I am so hooked!

I can not get enough of Nick and Grace. They are such a unique couple and so HOT together. As their life together moves along there are so many surprises for the reader. I did not see some of the surprises coming in this one. I am totally in love with this series and wait with baited breath for the next one!

Marleen Huysman and Volker Wulf have edited a nice book. I think it's the 1st book that links social capital and ICT in the foreground, altho many of us have also done stuff linking the 2 notions.

Among the authors/articles are a good intro/review piece by the editors; Anita Blanchard on dispersed virtual communities and F2F social capital; Rob Cross and Steve Borgatti on informaiton flows in corporations; Charles Steinfeld on the (lack of) use of e-commerce in geographically defined business clusters; Mark Ackerman & Christine Halversman on new CSCW directions for social capital. And Anabel Quan-Haase and myself summarizing our research on how the internet may affect social capital in communities online and offline.

Statistics a Foreign Language?

The Graduate School I attend has a mandatory requirement- all students must register and pass (with a B or better) Introductory and Advanced Statistics.
Intro Statistics was "instructed" by a gentleman who wanted to be anywhere else but the classroom. (Read:Taught myself Intro Stats). There are many texts that review statistical concepts and provide a step-by-step illustrations of the never-ending list of formulas. Having read a stack of textbooks, not one provides a condensed summary of all the procedural and conceptual explanations. This chart is the "missing link" . If for nothing else, you can use it as a placemat.

Good for class.

I bought this for a college stats class. I did not need that expensive textbook after this. Wish I would have purchased this first. It has examples for everything you use in a college stats class. Homework was never easier and it was handy to have. I resold it to people taking the class after me for 100% of the price because it is easy to use and well worth it. The other student took one look at it and did not try to haggle or anything, just handed me the money and said thanks.

I hate math

For a math challenged person as myself, this chart is excellent as a quick resource for statistics when working on a dissertation. Formulas and examples are provided that cover the content of a $100 book, conveniently hole-punched and laminated for quick reference. I wish it also gave a brief description of how each statistic is used to come to certain conclusions why the measures are used, such as what conclusions can be made in reference to educational measurement. But, for a quick reference guide, it has everything covered in basic statistics and then some (such as ANOVA and linear regression).

The purpose of this project has been to study, operate and program the 32-bit 150MIPS TMS320F2812 DSP developed by Texas Instruments Inc. In addition, it has also been a goal to implement fast estimation techniques for control of resonant converters. For this purpose, PWM signals that are generated using this DSP are used. The demands on the system and the hardware to solve the problem were already decided when I started the work. The algorithms were programmed in C/C++ language, compiled, debugged and transferred to the DSP development board in a compiling and simulation tool (downloader), called CCS (Code Composer Studio v2), also provided by Texas Instruments. In the first chapters of this study I give general information about control systems, digital signal processors, digital signal processing and the DSP used in this work. The following chapters tell about PWM, how to configure the PWM outputs and some examples related with PWM signals are given. After a short review of series resonant converters, I presented the last example implemented in this project. I conclude with a summary and provide some hints of future work.

Baris Bagci earned his BSc degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 2001 and his MSc degree in Electrical Engineering in 2003. Since then he worked in different areas from automotive to product testing, renewable energy technologies and high voltage measurement technologies. Having lived in Turkey, Germany and Japan, since 2005 he calls Hong Kong his home. Currently he is active in the electric power industry, providing consultancy services to power utilities across Asia Pacific.
