John Wooden (1910-2010), guided the UCLA Bruins to ten NCAA basketball championships over a 12-year period, including four perfect seasons and an 88-game winning streak. He was named ESPN’s “Greatest Coach of the 20th Century” and voted “#1 Coach of All Time” by The Sporting News. Sports Illustrated said it best when they said: “There’s never been a finer man in American sports than John Wooden, or a finer coach.” In 2003 John Wooden was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Insightful Autobiography

I'm not a college basketball fan - but I am a fan of those who dedicate their lives to making the world and those that they come in contact with better. John Wooden what the epitome of this philosophy. I purchased a few of his books after hearing Pete Carroll discuss the influence Wooden had on his leadership and coaching style. After spending a few days reading Wooden's autobiography, I can see the passion he had for his students, for his faith and for his family.

The book is a little lighter than I was hoping on discussing his philosophies and approaches and longer on showing them through the example of his life. The book takes the reader from his youth in Indiana through the late 1980's, and covers the great UCLA teams in some detail.

Anyone interested in the life of a great leader and teacher should read the book - if only for background and understanding how he lived his life. A good read.

What a truly GREAT MAN

I grew up not liking UCAL much. As a Northern Californian they won all the time and beat Cal and Stanford with ease-most of the time. I didn't like them-but I sure respected them a lot. My family has roots in Indiana and my grandfather played against Coach Wooden in high school so we were brought up respecting how his teams played.This book offers the coaches insight of his journey and how he became the greatest basketball coach in history. What a humble person who shows how greatness takes a lot of work and effort. There are no short cuts. A lesson a lot of todays college players would be wise to learn.

He is an inspiring man with great quotes and basketball knowledge. I wish the book would have been more about his theory on the court and strategies. Sometimes he lost me with the names of his players, teammates, and seasons because I am young and don't remember any of those teams. However, I highly recommend the book.

This fourth edition of Simulation with Arena has the same goal as the first three editions: to provide a comprehensive treatment of simulation concepts in general and the Arena simulation software in particular. It starts by having the reader develop simple, well-animated, high-level models, and then progresses to advanced modeling and analysis. Statistical design and analysis of simulation experiments is integrated with the modeling chapters, reflecting the joint nature of these activities in good simulation studies. The objective is to help the reader carry out effective simulation modeling, analysis, and projects using the Arena simulation system. An informal, tutorial writing style is used to aid the beginner in fully understanding the ideas and topics presented. Included is a CD containing the current version of the Arena academic software and the examples referenced throughout the text.

Starting with an introduction to simulation concepts, the book progresses through an overview of the Arena software, basic model development, input analysis, additional modeling constructs, output analysis, and advanced modeling. It also includes chapters on integrating Arena simulation models with other applications, specialized statistical issues, continuous simulation, and conducting a successful simulation study. It is intended primarily to be a text in a first course on simulation or for self-study. However, the later chapters could be incorporated into an advanced or graduate-level course.

Building on the success of the first three editions, published in 1998, 2002, and 2004, this edition retains the basic outline and tutorial style, built around a sequence of successively more complicated examples. All the examples and discussion, however, have been modified and updated to be consistent with the current version of the Arena software, and additional examples have been developed, along with more exercises. As before, a password-protected website for instructors provides support in terms of downloadable lecture slides and solutions to end-of-chapter exercises.

The book draws heavily on the experience and expertise of the authors, a professor at the University of Cincinnati specializing in simulation, and two seasoned members of Rockwell Software (formerly Systems Modeling), the developers of Arena, who are active in product design and development, training, consulting, and applications.

Outstanding textbook for first simulation course

I teach a simulation course using this book. It is one of the best textbooks I have ever used in any discipline. It is extremely well designed for an undergraduate audience. For more emphasis on the statistical fundamentals of simulation, I recommend Law and Kelton's graduate book, but if your goal is to complete a project for a company, or to prepare a comprehensive undergraduate simulation course with plenty of modeling examples and useful exercises, then this is the book that will take you from zero to hero.

A bit too messy

This book has been co-authored by a university professor and two Rockwell people. It neither serves its purpose as a "theory" book nor an "applied" book.

It leads you through the process of creating a simulation by using examples.

I would have preferred this to be more of a reference book answering questions such as "If I want to do this what modules should I use?". Instead, when faced with a minor question (e.g. how to count exiting entities with different attributes?) I end up reading half the book and still not find a suitable answer.

The occasionnal jokes are quite funny though!

It wasn't what I hoped it would be. I remember Plastic Fanatic, which was published by Roy. It was great! This was a let down from that. Not as good a "how to" magazine. Nice builds he does but not really a learning experience.

which makes the book less useful and effective than it would be without the writing

Arrived on time in decent packaging, and the book isn't falling apart. However, seller failed to mention that the book has been thoroughly used and written on, which would have been helpful to know as this is a workbook full of exercises, which makes the book less useful and effective than it would be without the writing. However, this is only ~30% of the book, and not a dealbreaker for me. There is no CD, but I expected this as the seller did disclose that aspect of the book. I needed the book quickly and cheaply and this fulfilled what I needed.

Good teacher, good book...bad teacher, bad book.

This textbook is not as evil as some reviewers make it seem, but it has some notable weaknesses. I can only summarize this by saying that, if you have a great teacher with native speaking abilities, you'll have much less of a grudge against this book. If you have a bad teacher, you will certainly hate this book. Given that a quality teacher is an essential supplement to this text, I must conclude that it is not the best choice for someone who is hoping to learn Arabic through independent study.

I am a college student completing my second year of Arabic language. I am currently in the middle of this textbook, and I will say that I find it to be an improvement over Part 1 of this series, as it makes an effort to teach vocabulary through roots and patterns rather than at random. A multitude of words in the Arabic language are derived from predictable patterns, so becoming familiar with the patterns enables learners to take a three letter root and derive all sorts of words, or to identify words with the same root and therefore similar meanings.

Another benefit of this textbook is that it is a standard in the academic/university setting. Therefore, if you plan to eventually enroll in a college Arabic course, it is good to be familiar with this text. In fact, as I was applying to study abroad programs, I was very grateful I had used this text, because almost every institution attempted to approximate the language level of applicants based on what chapter of Al-kitaab they reached in their studies.

This text does have drawbacks. Having already reached conversational proficiency in Spanish, I am honestly astonished by my lack of proficiency in Arabic given the amount of time and the intensity with which I study. The way this book is organized, it does not focus on teaching the most useful expressions and vocabulary first. I have known how to say, "My father works in the United Nations," since the first chapter of the first book in this series, and yet it isn't until months or even semesters later that students learn colors and body parts, learn how to say dates, ask what something costs, hail a cab, etc.

Ultimately, this book has been helpful because it made me realize how important it is for me to get abroad for as long as possible if I want to become conversationally proficient in this language. I'll be spending the next year enrolled in intensive language courses in Jordan. I'll bring this textbook with me, but I'll be glad when I don't have to use it.

Great for Learning

I've been speaking Arabic at home since I was born but I never learned how to read, write or speak Modern Standard Arabic. In taking classes at my University, I found this book and its 1st part very helpful. It explains the grammar in a general way which can be well understood by English speakers and I have used it through out my classes. Great book!

Unputdownable

Abimbola Dare has continued in the vein of her previous work, 'The Small Print', which was to send messages to listening ears and eyes without being overtly preachy. She has managed to create believable characters in real life situations with real life problems. All her characters are explained with the WHY alongside the WHAT makes them WHO they are. The WORD never gets in the way of a great story, while a great story never gets in the way of the WORD. It is a story that EVERY woman and man will learn from.

Well written and a compelling read. Thoroughly backed.

WOW!

I didn't know what to expect when I started reading this book. I have never heard of this author so I was taking a leap of faith. From the very beginning I was into the book. I didn't want to put it down and had to force myself to stop reading. There was not one boring part of the book. There was also a big shocker that had me shaking my head. I will definitely be reading more books by this author.

Eye Opening, Enlightening Read!

In "When Broken Chords Sing", Abimbola Dare captured vividly the many facets of abuse that occur in our communities.

From parental abuse as in Chris' and Amina's families, to spousal abuse at various levels by Destiny in particular and the other residents of The Safe Place. She also reflected on the helplessness that bystanders in family settings, church settings, community settings feel in the face of such abuse as seen in Destiny's mother's refusal to admit her daughter's abuse by her husband and Amina's mother's inability to stand up to protect her daughter. She reflected how such "helplessness" further emboldens the abuser as seen in the apparent support given by Pastor Dayo and Chris's mother and sister.

What intrigued me the most is Dare's pinpointing of the fact that the best way to deal with abuse is for the abused person to know that they need to save themselves first, before they save their marriage and their child(ren). To do that, they need to get out of and stay away from the abusive relationship and environment. That's what Kezzy should have done.

Very well written, I felt I was in the story experiencing it all with Destiny. I wish that I could give this book to all the young ladies I know, to help them know understand that abuse is something that they can walk into inadvertently like Destiny did, urging them to find themselves first before looking for a partner in life!

Warhol, who died in 1987, can be viewed as a relentless observer, who dwelled obsessively upon images representative of our century: the electric chair, a jet crash, the Soviet hammer and sickle, screen idols, politicians, symbolic volcanoes. This is an awesome book for Andy Warhol fans and collectors! I bought this used, and the quality was good. A little musty smelling, but I figure that's from the age of the book. Fast shipping, which was perfect for the Christmas holidays! Bought this for my 16 yr old son, who is a big fan of pop art and Andy Warhol. :)
