About the Author
Peter R. Breggin, M.D., is a psychiatrist and expert in clinical psychopharmacology. A former teaching fellow at Harvard Medical School and full-time consultant at the National Institute of Mental Health, he has written dozens of scientific articles and more than twenty books, including the bestsellers "Toxic Psychiatry "and "Talking Back to Prozac". He has served as a medical expert in criminal and civil cases involving psychiatric drugs, including product-liability suits against drug manufacturers. Dr. Breggin founded the International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology, taught at universities, and is on the editorial boards of several scientific journals. He lives in the Finger Lakes region with his wife, Ginger, and practices psychiatry in Ithaca, New York.

Psychiatric Drug Withdrawal --- a much needed book!

Psychiatric Drug Withdrawal is a book for the seasoned professional and the beginning graduate student, as well as for the patient and the family. This is in keeping with Dr. Breggin's emphasis on a collaborative team approach to treatment and especially to drug withdrawal. This is not a book you will read once, but one you will have by your side, as a reference, for helping a love one or your client.
The first ten chapters inform us of the effects psychiatric drugs have on our brains and educate us regarding specific drugs. In chapter 11, Dr. Breggin, using his years of clinical experiences, puts all the ingredients together and demonstrates how to help individuals regain their lives from the disabling effects of drugs. Dr. Breggin does this by putting counseling and psychotherapy back in the forefront as the intervention and not the drugs. He gives respect and dignity back to the counseling process, including the active participation of the client and at times the family.
It is refreshing to read a book renewing the use of the core conditions (empathy, genuineness, and positive self-regard) as necessary and sufficient in helping clients' function effectively. This is a long stretch from the medical model, which mistrusts human nature, relies on brain drugs, and denies self-responsibility. Dr. Breggin invites us to use what works, empathy and a therapeutic relationship.
This is a book that is both academic and clinical, and at the same time easily read by clients and families. A rare combination for the practicing therapist. His years of experience researching the effects of psychiatric medications combined with being an excellent practitioner are explained in a systematic and effective manner. You will learn the effects of drugs and how to approach your client in a collaborative and humane manner. This is what we need. The idea that drugs are the answer has failed and at the high cost of human suffering.

The most valuable book on this psychiatrist's shelf

As a practicing psychiatrist I would like to say that Dr. Breggin's career has been the most valuable role model for my work. I have read several of his other works, which have informed my practice and provided structure for the rewarding work that I do. Namely that is helping folks safely and effectively come off of harmful psychiatric drugs.
The pharmaceutical companies have infiltrated psychiatric residencies to indoctrinate psychiatric training programs with their prescribing advice. This results in the epidemic we have now, with literally millions of folks hooked/stuck on their compounds. Unfortunately most training programs offer only cursory instruction as to how to help people safely come off of these meds once on them. It can be extremely challenging for the patient and the prescriber.
Fortunately Dr. Breggin has pioneered the most appropriate field regarding psychiatric drugs - how to safely and effectively come off of them. I've read several of his other books - The Antidepressant Fact Book, The Ritalin Fact Book, and Medication Madness. This work represents the culmination of his writings and offers psychiatrists and other prescribers effective techniques to help people come off of these drugs safely. While there's little useful research on effective withdrawal techniques, Dr. Breggin's singular role as a lifelong courageous advocate for the patients impacted by these pills gives him the experience to develop effective withdrawal methods. I reference his work on an almost daily basis - all of my patients have heard me mention his name, and several have read this book. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Taught me how to come off psych drugs

This is a great book, especially if you want to SLOWLY come off of your meds. Shows the ins and outs of what you may face and addresses it quite clearly and thoroughly. I've been off all my meds for 6 months and I've been doing better than ever when in the past I had struggled so much that I had returned to taking the psych drugs. Never again! And this book will show you the right way to go about coming off your psych meds safely. Remember that coming off requires a slow taper. Personally, it took me 5 months to taper. The book teaches that it may take longer or less than that and will tell you the safest way to get off the meds. Can't say enough for Dr.Breggin or this book!
