A fun read and a good introduction to high-end audio and equipment

I purchased this book primarily to give me a better overview of equipment so that I can make better-informed decisions on upgrading my 7.1 channel system that I also use for 2-channel music. I really liked the book. It was easy reading and went into some great detail about different types of equipment. The book doesn't/won't promote any particular brands. Rather, it emphasizes 1) What to look for 2) The types of pros and cons with different types of equipment 3) the critical importance of matching components throughout the sound chain and 4) that developing a good relationship with a high-end dealer and reading high-end magazine reviews are key.

I don't have a lot of money to spend so I want to make sure that if/when I make any equipment purchases I do so wisely. I appreciated the section on used and demo equipment (along with the pitfalls) and also there's a good section on your approach: buying a system all at once or upgrading one component at a time.

If you are into audio and want to learn more then this is a good, enjoyable text for you to own.

An Excellent Guide to Hi-FI

I've had my fill of arrogant Hi-Fi sales people who reside in many high end stereo shops. I, for one (and I'm sure I'm not only in this matter) do not enjoy being insulted and talked down to by these insecure jerks. I'm amazed these people are are able sell anything? As Someone interested in upgrading my stereo system into the lower high end and not being an electronics techno-geek, I was delighted to find a book such as this. Harley's book is an easy to understand guide to the basics of Hi-Fi. What a relief to read a book about Hi-Fi written by someone more interested in music then the techno-jargon so many audiophiles and Hi-Fi sales people seem to speak. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Hi-Fi but were afraid to ask or don't know the right questions to ask when looking to buy equipment.

An Indispensible Resource for Teaching HS Math!

I have been teaching math in Waldorf schools for 12 years, and in public schools for 3 years prior to that. When I began my Waldorf training in 2005, I encountered Jamie York as a teacher and mentor in that program. Since that time, I feel I have been consistently enriched, challenged, and enticed as a math teacher through Jamie’s Source Book material. This book is chock-full of amazing, invigorating mathematics. Unlike modern math textbooks, Jamie writes and explains mathematical puzzles and problems just up to a certain “jumping off point,” then expects the teacher to actively engage with the material. Time and time again, I have read a rich nugget in Jamie’s Source Book, which has led me to do further investigation on my own. The joy of math is in discovery, and Jamie’s work has allowed me, as a math teacher, to do just that. In turn, I can create situations where my students also have the opportunity to create and discover mathematical wonder.
The Source Book contains an amazing array of material, and types of mathematics. Beginning with some brief introductory commentary that is well worth reading (“Today’s Challenge”, “Thoughts on Teaching Math”, “Will our Students Be Prepared?” are a few subtitles), the book is organized by grade level (9th-12th) based on Jamie’s experience and research of teaching these subjects. In Waldorf schools, every attempt is made to teach subjects developmentally, i.e. the right topic at the right age. Math education has often been an exception to this approach: even in Waldorf schools, it’s often thought to be OK to allow students to learn math at their “natural pace.” This leads to, for example, teaching algebra to 6th graders in an intensive way. Yet, reading Jamie’s thoughts and working with his material has made me a believer that, for example, there is absolutely no rush to teach Cartesian coordinate graphing before late 10th grade (buy the book to read more, page 9). Rather, Jamie advocates for introducing and working with a much wider range of mathematics than is normally attempted. Examples include: Possibility and Probability, and Descriptive Geometry in 9th grade; Circle and Triangle Geometry, Mensuration, and Sequences and Series in 10th Grade; and Projective Geometry, Complex Numbers and Polarity in 11th and 12th grade. Jamie has included sufficient challenge within each math area of study to keep the most advanced students joyfully engaged, while allowing the “regular” student to also experience the joy of mathematics without shutting down. Jamie’s book includes an entire unit on Descartes and his geometry; another on Cantor, Hilbert, Russel, Gödel and modern mathematical philosophy; another on the development of Calculus. It includes mathematics from Plato to Euclid to Archimedes, Al-Khwarizmi to Galileo to Newton and Liebniz . . . the whole gamut of human endeavor in mathematics is represented here. In each new study, the goal is to engage one’s mind in the same mathematics that occupied the minds of the greatest mathematicians that have ever lived, and thereby to experience the same awe and wonder that they experienced!
Mathematics as an educational subject has been severely crippled by several onuses inappropriately placed upon it: as a litmus test for the “truly gifted” student; as an excuse to label and stratify students according to perceived natural ability; as a discipline whose only justification is in service of engineering and technological achievements. But, working with Jamie’s book reveals the truth: math is an art form, to be practiced and enjoyed, possibly the most sublime art form ever invented. This Source Book is for the teacher of mathematics who has a true love of her/his subject matter, and wants to continuously enhance his/her ability to transfer that love to her/his students. This Source Book will deliver for years and years to come, with new mathematic challenges to explore and enjoy! Best outpatient pocket Pediatrics book out there!

I am a FNP student, so I work primarily in the clinic setting. This book is fantastic. It is exactly what I was looking for. It has everything from diagnosis and treatment for otitis media to ADHD to eczema to asthma. It has growth charts, immunization charts, common fractures and more. It has clear, concise charts so the information is easy to find. I added my own colored tabs so I could easy flip to what I am looking for.
I agree with other reviewers that the print is pretty small. It's equal to about a 6 or 8 point font. I am willing to deal with that to have everything I need in such a small book. This book is a little bit bigger than a regular 3x5 index card, and it's only 1/2 inch thick. It's very light weight, too. I prefer this book to the other 2 books that I purchased.

I had purchased 2 other books prior:
"Pocket Notebook: Pocket Pediatrics (MassGeneral Hospital)" and Clinical Coach for Nurse Practitioners. The Pocket Pediatric book (light blue cover) is more for inpatient. It covers many, many diseases and even has sections on pediatric emergencies- and PICU information. This didn't really pertain to what I am doing right now. The clinical coach book has a Pediatrics section which covers antibiotics, and lightly covers a few diseases (asthma, ADHD, etc), but I found that it really wasn't enough information, and the book is big. It's about 6x8, and 1 inch thick. What I did like about the clinical coach book is it has a differential diagnoses section that is easy to use. You find the symptom on the easy access tab, and flip to the page. The tables are colorful, and easy to read. There is one table in this book that I really love- it lists the most common antibiotics, and marks an 'X' for what it covers: CAP, sinusitis, OM, etc.

FNP practicing in pediatrics 10+ years. Never seen a resource as compact and thorough as this reference. Glad to see a reference that actually addresses more than just common illnesses that I don't even need a reference for like strep throat, OM, eczema etc. This little baby has nearly 300 pages of essential/useful information for the seasoned or unseasoned pediatric practitioner. Send one to your shopping cart and get busy healing children and keeping them healthy. 2 thumbs (and 2 great toes) up!

This book makes learning sign language very easy. You do have to practice

This book makes learning sign language very easy. You do have to practice, but it comes back pretty quickly for me when it has been a while. The only thing that gets me is in some of the extra practice there are words/signs that weren't covered in the chapter. That is why I only gave it 4 stars, Overall the book is great and makes learning sign language fun.

Makes Learning ASL for Varied Learning Needs Easy

There is a group of three of us with one whose ASL need will be of extreme importance in years coming. He is called a "highly functioning autistic" working with "coach" for developmentally challenged. He has two cochlea implants. Whatever the level, this book is well illustrated, attractive and leads in steps with review pages of materials covered in each chapter. I have worked with another book that had been the best for years. This book makes learning ASL fun.

This is the first book I have purchased (and I have about half a dozen books on sign language) that actually gives the learner practice in READING signs. I also like the notes at the bottom of the page that serve as a kind of thesaurus (other words that are signed in the same or almost the same way). I highly recommend this book to people who are learning sign language.

Must reading for action fans and would-be action writers...

Reading The day of the Jackal is a genuine pleasure in the tell-me-a-story, invest-me-in-rich-characters, transport-and-titillate-me a little and-spin-a-rich-yarn sense.

This story succeeds with a nuance rarely seen in today's rapid fire style action thriller. And does it ever succeed! Bear in mind that to enjoy this you're expected to soak in details of life in Europe in the early 1960'---to be transported back to days when it took 30 minutes for a long distance call to connect. The action unfolds at a normal human pace, unaided by strident and intrusive technology. People have to pause their action, often for hours or even a day at a time, to wait for fresh information to start flowing again and set the next act in motion.

The rotary phone pacing means you have time to ponder past events and look ahead to what's ahead in the next pages. It also adds tremendously to the experience as you become engaged in the slow, methodical hunt for the Jackal and concurrently in the evasive tactical maneuvers of the Jackal to elude his pursuers.

Forsyth provides his readers with brief, teasing looks over the plot horizon and then restrains you as circumstances slowly unwind to deliver surprising twists and turns from his major characters--the slick and instinctive Jackal playing mouse to plodding, rumpled, but quietly cerebral Lebel. To enjoy this fully you have to be willing to forgo explosive immediate gratification for a slower gratification made so much sweeter by it's consistently textured delivery.

The ending satisfies but it's the rich and nuanced journey that will stick with you when you lay the book down (or turn the audiobook off).

So if you're willing trade down from warp drive to 1960's style mach drive you'll relish the outcome of this literary experience.

Despite the fact that the reader knows that the hired gun's attempt will not succeed in the end (since De Gaulle was not shot), the book is gripping and filled with interesting detail about both the killer's elaborate preparations and Label (the French cop trying to identify him) and his mission.

I enjoyed it very much, I loved the way he handled the characters, I have read this story more the fifty times over the last 30 years. Robert P.S. I also have the movie, of course it is not as good as the book for so much is left out.
