A great collection of short-stories spanning all across the Halo universe
By Jared L
There are thirteen short-stories present in this novel that span across the timeline of the entire Halo universe. Most of the stories are around 30-40 pages, with a couple being around 15-20 and one spanning almost 100 pages in length.

Each story takes place at a different time of the Halo universe, ranging from the end of recorded Forerunner history up to the events of "Halo 5: Guardians". A lot of the stories are continuations or act as sequels to past Halo stories.

1. We get to see what Spartan-III survivors Tom and Lucy are up to after their rescue from Onyx after the events of "Halo: Glasslands".
2. There's a story that takes place on Meridian following the Guardian awakening and escaping after the events in Halo 5.
3. There's a story about Bornstellar after the firing of the Halo array.
4. There's a story about Veta Lopis and the Spartan-III's Mark, Ash, and Olivia after the events of "Halo: Last Light".
5. There's a story taking place on Venezia following the events of the Kilo-Five trilogy.
6. One of the more surprising stories included is "Shadow of Intent", which is the entire short-story starring Rtas 'Vadum, the Half-Jaw Elite, who fought alongside the Master Chief and Arbiter during the final days of the Covenant War (Halo 3). This story was only ever released digitally up until now, and so is a very nice inclusion in this novel.

Among other great stories that span across the events of Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 4, and Halo 5: Guardians.

Fans of Halo lore should give this book a try. Because it is all short-stories, it is very easy to pickup and read, and expands upon a lot of the things we have learned about from prior novels and Halo events.

Great Variety of Adventures
By Skuldren
With 13 stories, Halo: Fractures has a variety of adventures written by different authors to suit every reader’s interest. For Star Wars fans like me, there are quite a few recognizable names, which is what led me to the book. Fans of the game will also find a lot to enjoy as the various tales explore everything from the Forerunners to the Spartans and the Sangheili. There’s combat, space battles, spy missions, encounters with the Flood, and pieces of backstory revealing more about the core characters of the franchise. There’s a little bit of everything.

All that said, the book was a slow starter for me. It opens with “Lessons Learned” by Matt Forbeck, which wasn’t all that great and suffered a lot from not being a self-contained story. It stars two Spartans named Tom and Lucy who have a hard to believe adventure in the void of space without suits to save a fellow Spartan. They learn about another Spartan’s betrayal, get shipped out to Onyx, and everyone exhibits extreme, testrone blitzed behavior that makes the characters seem more like animals than humans. Following that is “What Remains” by Morgan Lockhart, which was a little better. It takes place on a glassed world called Meridian and follows a group of survivors who get a strange message. But the story ends there without feeling complete. Both stories feel like partial building blocks for something larger, or perhaps teases for readers who have read the author’s previous works. I’ve only read a couple Halo books, so both of the stories felt incomplete to me and unsatisfying.

However, the third story in the anthology turns things around. “Breaking Strain” by James Swallow features good characters and good writing. A group of Stranded marines and one Spartan wind up on a remote world in a fishing colony and have to deal with crises of fear and anger. Going up against the locals becomes a worsening conflict that made even more complicated with the impending arrival of a Covenant ship. It’s a nice setup and plays out well.

Next up is “Promises to Keep” by Christie Golden. Christie changes things up by diving way into the past to tell a story about the Forerunners. It explores their thoughts, motivations and the challenges they came up against. Yet most notably, one of the Forerunners featured in the story is the one who actually activated the Halo. But the story isn’t about the destruction. Rather, it focuses on them bringing back life and finding lives for themselves. It’s an intriguing tale about discovery, origins and mystery.

Then there is “Shadow of Intent” by Joseph Staten. I really liked this one as it gives a lot of attention to both the good guys and the bad guys. It shows the two sides of the Covenant, the different alien species, and fleshes out the complexities of the participants on both sides. There’s a lot of investment in the characters that by the end of the story, you don’t know who to root for. With a moving ending and a compelling story, it was one of the highlights of the book.

Afterwards is an oddball. “The Ballad of Hamish Beamish” by Frank O’Connor is actually a ballad. The whole story is done as a song. Yet as odd as it is, it’s kind of amusing.

“Defender of the Storm” by John Jackson Miller brings things back on track as John tells a story about a below average Forerunner in a forgotten corner of the galaxy who deals with the boredom and struggles of his life. Of course wishing for interesting times can backfire, and when things get interesting, the main character has to rise to the occasion or accept death. Tackling things like duty, boredom, life, dejection and hope, it’s a good story.

“A Necessary Truth” by Troy Denning follows up on several of the characters from his Halo novel Last Light. Last Light is one of the few Halo novels I’ve read, so it was fun to see these characters pop up again. This story is set after the events of the book and follows Veta Lopis and the Spartans Ash, Mark and Olivia as they’re now working for the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI). The story dives deep into the world of espionage and shows the usefulness of Spartans in other roles. It’s definitely not your typical Halo story, but it’s fun.

“Into the Fire” by Kelly Gay also takes a step away from the usual as it follows a team of salvagers who make money off wreckage from the war. With great writing and characterization, it gets you hooked and wanting more when the story suddenly comes to a stop. This one has the feel of being a primer for a bigger story. Thankfully, we will be getting the rest, I think, as Kelly has an eBook scheduled for release in November called Halo: Smoke and Shadow which has connections to “Into the Fire.”

Stepping back into the oddness, Frank O’Connor has another story called “Saint’s Testimony.” It’s about an AI who is on trial. Since the AI’s only get seven years to live, this one tries to plead for an extension. Yet it gets weird, and doesn’t make the most sense. This one is probably geared toward readers who are better versed in the lore of Halo or previous stories as I wasn’t overly familiar with the AI’s they mentioned.

“Rossbach’s World” by Brian Reed is an odd story about Serin Osman, an AI named BB, and includes a lot of references to Cortana. Sadly this story is more narrative than actually storytelling and it’s mostly a fill in the blanks kind of story that doesn’t feel very complete.

“Oasis” by Tobias Buckell injects a boost of energy into the anthology as it follows a young settler who is forced to reach beyond their means and their prejudices. It highlights human and alien alike, and focuses on the divide between them. It’s a good story. Like “Into the Fire,” this one will be getting a follow up, but Buckell will be writing a full novel called Halo: Envoy which will be out in April 2017.

“Anarosa” by Kevin Grace is the last story listed in the anthology and is kind of a weird one. It’s about a human and an AI who try to recruit people to be templates for future AI’s. It’s an okay story, but not as good as some of the others in the anthology.

The book then goes to Acknowledgements and is seemingly over. There’s a little section on the authors, and then, very casually without any title, setup or description, the book has another story. Or at least a follow up to a story. It’s not credited, but it’s a continuation of Christie Golden’s story and shows what happens to her Forerunner characters following their escape. I have to admit, this little story saved the book as it ended things on a very positive, enjoyable note. When you’re ready the book, make sure you don’t skip it, as it would be easy to miss.

Overall, for casual Halo fans or readers new to the franchise, Halo: Fractures provides a nice overview of the universe and the stories and characters that can be explored. While not all of the stories are great, there are a lot of good ones and it makes the book worthwhile. I give it a four and a half out of five metal bikinis and highly recommend checking it out if you’re a fan of Halo or the authors.

An aspring baker's perspective
By Richard
I should be clear that I'm writing this as a younger professional baker who has focused on whole grains, at work and at home. I've only been doing this a couple years and I have a lot to learn. Overall I highly recommend this book and am happy that I purchased it. The recipes are good, the proportions have been well researched, and after doing a dozen or so I'm very happy with what I've eaten and learned. Tartine Bread is what got me into bread baking in the first place and in many ways changed the direction of my life. With that said, I have some constructive criticisms of the new book - I focus on the bread section, I'm not interested in pastry.

And an aside: I see in other reviews beginning bakers who had difficulty - I don't think this is a book for beginners, start with Tartine Bread, and even then only if you are dedicated. These methods make the best breads that exist, but not without a learning curve.

The flaw of this book, and of many baking books and the food publishing industry in general, is that they are simply recipe books. Recipes are nice, they give you a place to start, and they slowly but surely add to one's intuitive knowledge - but they don't teach you much about the big picture. I was really really hoping that this book would build on Tartine Bread in that direction. Tartine Bread laid out a good foundation, both in technique and in some background theory, but it left me wanting so much more. I had high hopes that this book, focusing on whole grains, would have dived deeper into the nuances of naturally leavened baking, both in general and with the variety of different grains.

There are some simple examples: He has bumped up the salt percentage to 2.5% from the 2% used in Tartine Bread. Why? Has he changed his overall opinion on salt, or does the change arise from using more whole grains? He adds wheat germ to every loaf in the book; why? That seems so random, and yet there is no explanation (unless I missed it). The time in the dutch oven in this book has been extended to 30 minutes before the cover is removed. Why? Even the basic structure of the recipes lacks important explanation.

But more profoundly, I think there's a lot he leaves out about the overall skill of baking - and for me, I want skills, not blueprints. My loaves turn out pretty good, but I've never pulled a loaf from my oven that has the open, creamy crumb structure I have seen at Tartine or in his pictures. There must be so much to say about the nuances of managing a leaven, about the feel of the dough at different stages, about the final proof and what you look for and how that pertains to whole grains, about hydration and how it affects each variable in the process.. and about how each grain reacts differently to the whole baking process.. not to mention all the factors that affect the crust and structure of the loaf through the end of the bake. And there still isn't one book with practical, comprehensive information about milling and flours.. (aging vs. not aging fresh milled flour, flour strength, how fine vs. course milling affects the loaf, etc etc etc..)

Again - I write this as a baker who is a voracious learner who is never satisfied with his skills and knowledge. For someone that just wants a recipe book, it's a great recipe book - my favorite. 5/5. But as a tool to learn, 2/5.. Basically, I'm bummed that a guy who clearly has so much passion and knowledge and wisdom seems to be holding back. I'd much rather he focus on the craft itself than page after page of pretty photos which are a reminder of my elusive goal to develop as a baker! So I write this review largely to cast my vote: I don't think we need any more recipe books. I want to learn the knowledge and craft that are behind it all..

Tempered Enthusiasm, Partial Disappointment
By Rick
Chad Robertson explains in “Tartine Book No. 3” that “Tartine bread is built within a system that defines our approach to baking” (p. 32). This system is presented in a section called “Master Method for Tartine Loaves” that provides the underlying foundation for bread baking with this book. There are certain aspects of this method that have merit and for which I have some excitement for, yet I believe that parts of it are over-simplified and disappointing. Therefore, I wish to now join the ranks of the critical reviewers, but if it’s any consolation I can honestly say that my favorite bread book at least has a picture of Chad Robertson on the cover—although it was authored by someone else! Said book, “The Bread Builders: Hearth Loaves and Masonry Ovens” by Daniel Wing and Alan Scott, would be a great addition to your bread baking library if you decide to bake from Robertson’s Tartine books because it will help address some of the shortcomings of the Tartine method.

One of the best things the Tartine method has going for it is the use of Dutch ovens for baking with. The rationale is well-explained in “Tartine Bread,” “Home bakers are faced with the challenge of saturating with steam an oven designed to ventilate moisture. I have tried many methods for steaming in a conventional home oven, from wet towels to boiling pots of water, but no matter how much steam was created, it was impossible to trap enough moisture needed to achieve results at home similar to those from a professional bread-baking oven….Using the dutch oven at home allows you to bake gaining the two main characteristics of a professional brick oven: a sealed moist chamber and strong radiant heat. The results are indistinguishable from those using a professional baker’s oven” (p. 66). Some of the product images supplied by customers of their finished loaves from “Tartine Bread” are quite impressive and they largely verified Robertson’s prediction in “Tartine Bread”: “I would not attempt a book with the home baker in mind if the results could never live up to the images. They can. And they will” (p. 32).

The one thing that we do not know from product images is what is happening on the bottom of the loaf. Although the top may appear very appealing, the bottom may have been burned to some extent. This is the area where I have had consistency problems with the Tartine method. Part of the problem arises from pre-heat instructions. Both “Tartine Bread” (p. 67) and “Tartine Book No. 3” (p. 41) specify a 20 minute pre-heat at 500F. I knew before I ever baked a single recipe from Tartine that there is no way that a cold Dutch oven placed in a cold oven will come up to 500F in 20 minutes. Because my results were variable, I decided to troubleshoot using a data logging thermometer and two K type thermocouples (one sensing the surface temperature of the Dutch oven and the other sensing the air in the vicinity of the Dutch oven). The advantage of this setup is that the steel braided thermocouples are thin enough to pass out through the oven door while maintaining a good seal and not requiring multiple opening and closings of the door to take temperature readings with an infrared device. With the Dutch oven on the lowest rack (as specified by Robertson), the air temperature in the oven took 21 minutes to reach 500F. That was about what was expected, but at 21 minutes the temperature of the Dutch oven was only 371F. The total pre-heat time for the Dutch oven to finally reach 500F was actually 47 minutes--over double the instructed time. So, the Dutch oven continues to heat up well past the 20 minute period specified by Robertson, and the results vary depending upon how much longer you actually wait before you bake.

Your oven’s controls do not know of the existence of a Dutch oven (nor of a baking stone). I have just demonstrated to you that these items can be at a very different temperature than the air in the oven. The information presented in “The Bread Builders” is aimed at assisting people to bake with masonry ovens, but I have found that some of this information has been equally helpful in fine-tuning results from the Tartine method.

Robertson writes that his method “is devoted to the use of natural leaven, often called sourdough. I promote using a ‘younger’ leaven with very little acidity” (“Tartine Bread,” p. 15). This has been nice for my family, because my wife will eat some of his repertoire whereas she normally is not interested in sourdough breads. Robertson provides instructions on how to determine when your leaven is ready to bake, called a “float test.” I have found that my Tartine-method younger leaven typically passes this test around a pH of 4.7 to 4.8. This is in contrast to “Peter Reinhart’s Whole Grain Breads” (p. 77) which specifies a range of 3.5 to 4.0.

There are some authors who only use sourdough starter to provide acidity while the final dough is leavened primarily by commercial yeast rather than from the slower acting wild yeasts naturally present in the starter. I have generally found these recipes to be mild in taste, and it is not totally apparent to me whether the extra effort to bake pure sourdough without commercial yeast is justified given the extra time involved. In “Tartine Book No. 3,” the master method has changed somewhat from the first book to include even longer bulk rise times of 3-4 hours (or overnight) and the final rising expected to take 3-5 hours (or overnight). These are very significant time commitments.

In “Tartine Bread,” the sourdough starter was refreshed once per day, but the actual Tartine Bakery did not follow that method. This always concerned me greatly. Robertson writes thus regarding the bakery, “We always feed at moderate room temperatures using a small seed amount (less acid transfer), and we feed often—a few times per day depending on the season” (p. 72). Happily, the Tartine method has been modified in “Book No. 3” to be two times per day, which is definitely an improvement. For some time, I tried a 2X/day refreshment scheme by another author, but I was never entirely satisfied with its leavening. After researching and trying out a lot of approaches by different authors, I came to the conclusion that my cultures were better off with three refreshments per day leading up to a bake. If you try out Robertson’s starter instructions and are satisfied—then all is well. Just remember that “The Bread Builders” has one of the best presentations on maintaining a sourdough starter, and it can be of great assistance if you need troubleshooting advice.

“Tartine Book No. 3” has a much larger repertoire than “Tartine Bread.” Some of the recipes look quite interesting, if not even exotic. I expect that it will be an interesting journey.

Update May, 2016: over the last two years, the book has proven to be both interesting and exotic. It has been my general experience that the pan loaf style of baking has worked better for my taste buds with these recipes than the darker baked boules that Tartine is more famous for. In almost every instance where I have made a dark baked boule I have regretted it and wished I hadn't. I have been finding that Tartine pan loaves often have a very agreeable crumb that works excellent for sandwiches, while the dark crust just seems to overwhelm and dominate the wonderful crumb flavor. I feel justified in baking these recipes using a pan because it was covered in the first book, being perfected by one of the test bakers whose name was Dave (see "Tartine Bread, pp. 84-87).

I was also given a book by Samuel Fromartz called "In Search of the Perfect Loaf, a Home Baker's Odyssey." Fromartz visited the Tartine bakery and provides valuable information on dough hydration which has resulted in better gluten development of the loaves that I bake from this book. I plan on continuing on with my journey through this book, but I expect that it will be slowed somewhat by going back to bake more often from the first Tartine book which has yielded some favorites that I have missed baking while concentrating my efforts on this book.

Excellent, but should have been proof-read once more
By Emil Atanasov
I love this book. I love Chad and Tartine, too. He's a fantastic baker, and a great guy, and I enjoyed meeting him in his esteemed bakery. I own the first Tartine book and had this one pre-ordered for months before it just arrived in time for the holidays. This morning I made the Salted Chocolate Rye Cookies and they are simply awesome. I've already read most of the book and I'm going to have quite a bit of fun with many of the recipes. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has at least moderate baking experience and wants to go to the next level with recipes that use whole, ancient grain flours and cultured milk and cream such as kefir.

The reason I'm giving taking a star off the rating for this book is that it needs attention in the accuracy of some of the recipes. I'm going to point one as an example. The Chamomile-Kamut Shortbread recipe was obviously not given enough attention to detail by the editor. It asks for 10g of chamomile flowers to be infused into 53g of honey. Well, that's great on paper, but trying to do this in reality produces a sticky mess of the worst quality. You'll end up with almost all of your honey being bound by the flowers and/or tea-bag you're using. You may be able to squeeze out 1 tablespoon out of the original 1/4 cup quantity of honey. The recipe goes on to tell you to "Remove the chamomile and discard." Then it never tells you what to do with the chamomile infused honey. And later at the end tells you to "then fold in the lemon zest and chamomile flowers". Well, for someone with experience it's not going to be a problem to figure out to whip the honey with the butter and ignore the chamomile flowers instruction, but for someone relatively new to baking it would be a problem. These kinds of confusing instructions could, and should have been avoided in a book of this quality. UPDATE: I just finished baking these and noted yet another error/inaccuracy in the same shortbread recipe. It instructs to cut the shortbread into 1x2" cookies and that the recipe would yield about 5 dozen cookies. That means 60 cookies at 2 sq. in. per cookie, or 120 sq. in. of shortbread needed to get that yield. I'll let you decide how to get that from a 6x10" pan (i.e. 60 sq. in. of baked surface). In other words, the actual yield is half of what the recipe promises. Yes, the book was definitely rushed to print before it was ready for prime time.

I also agree with one of the previous comments that points out that the book has an air of pretentiousness about it. Though, as they say, it ain't bragging if you can do it, and they definitely can do it at Tartine. Still, let's remember Charlie Trotter and pause...take a breath...and be human again.

One more thing that I was thrilled about was the primer on kefir and making kefir cream and butter. It was sort of a synchronicity for me as I had just started culturing raw milk kefir about 3 weeks ago and made kefir cream and butter about 4 days before the book showed up. I was super stoked about this and will be making the Lemon-Poppy-Kefir Pound Cake as soon as my next batch of kefir cream is ready so I can beat it into butter. On that note, if you have not yet had real kefir-cultured butter from raw cream, well, I'm simply hoping you will do yourself a favor and make it so that you can understand what an incredible difference it makes.

The Blood Mirror (Lightbringer), by Brent Weeks

The nail-biting continuation to the Lightbringer series from New York Times bestseller Brent Weeks.

When does an empire fall?
The Seven Satrapies have collapsed into four-and those are falling before the White King's armies.
Gavin Guile, ex-emperor, ex-Prism, ex-galley slave, formerly the one man who might have averted war, is now lost, broken, and trapped in a prison crafted by his own hands to hold a great magical genius. But Gavin has no magic at all. Worse, in this prison, Gavin may not be alone.
Kip Guile will make a last, desperate attempt to stop the White King's growing horde. Karris White attempts to knit together an empire falling apart, helped only by her murderous and possibly treasonous father-in-law Andross Guile.
Meanwhile, Teia's new talents will find a darker use-and the cost might be too much to bear.
Together, they will fight to prevent a tainted empire from becoming something even worse.

They look like they're supposed to. They talk like they're supposed to. But they sure don't act like they're supposed to. Sixteen boys in a remote boarding school, children of some of the wealthiest and most powerful families in the world. Juvenile delinquents, all: drugs, shoplifting, vandalism. Yet suddenly they're perfect, well-behaved and studious. Identical in every way-or almost every way. Something is wrong. Very wrong. And only fourteen-year-old secret agent Alex Rider can save these boys from themselves. Should he fail, one man's sinister plan to conquer the world will become reality.

Full of heart-pounding adventure, technological wizardry, tongue-in-cheek humor, and a James Bond-like spirit, this sequel to Stormbreaker is a thrill ride you won't want to let up.

From Publishers Weekly
Powerful, privileged and screwed up, 16 boys in a boarding school suddenly turn into model students. It's up to 14-year-old Alex Rider to find out why and to face the maniacal man who has engineered it all in a bid to take over the world in Point Blank: An Alexander Rider Adventure by Anthony Horowitz, the follow-up to last year's Stormbreaker.

From School Library Journal
Gr 5-10-After two influential businessmen die in separate freak accidents, MI6, England's spy network, once again calls upon 14-year-old Alex Rider to infiltrate Point Blanc, a private school in the French Alps for out-of-control, wealthy teens. Armed only with his wits and some 007-type devices, he stumbles upon an evil mad scientist's plot to take over the world using clones as replacements for prominent sons. Spy gadgets, chase scenes, mysteries, and a cliff-hanger ending will keep even reluctant readers interested in the second novel in this series. Familiarity with the first novel is not necessary as the plot fills in past information when needed, but many students will want to go back and read Stormbreaker (Philomel, 2001) to see how Alex first became involved with MI6.

From Booklist
Gr. 6-10. There are times when a grade-B adventure is just the ticket for a bored teenager--especially if it offers plenty of slam-bang action, spying, and high-tech gadgets. Point Blank, the second in the Alex Rider Adventure series, is a nonstop thriller of just that sort, which features a 14-year-old orphan who is a reluctant spy for the British government. Trained by his uncle, a topnotch spy who died with his boots on, Alex is a bright, tough, daredevil athlete. No wonder M16 wants him to investigate a mysterious Swiss school dedicated to "reforming" delinquent sons of wealthy industrialists and important officials. Using a false identity, Alex enters the school and soon finds himself surrounded by curiously docile students, teachers who support the fascism, and a renegade doctor interested in cloning. With secret rooms, sullen sentries, mysterious disappearances, and wild rides galore, this is a great choice for reluctant readers. Jean Franklin

The best one yet
By A Customer
Point Blank is one of the best books I have ever read. Some of the other books I have enjoyed are Stormbreaker also by Anthony Horowitz and the animorphs series by K.A. Applegate.
Point Blank starts like any other book with a child as the main character. The catch is that Alex Rider is no ordinary kid, he works for MI6. Yeah that's right, the same organization James Bond works for. Anyway, you know how Bond films always have a little "mission" at the beginning and Point Blank in no exception. I'm not going to tell you what it is but it is really cool. After he receives a call from MI6, he has a new mission.
Something is going on at a private correctional school in France called Point Blanc, they want Alex to find out what. However, Point Blanc only takes the sons of the super-rich or ultra-powerful. Because of that, Alex must disguise himself as a billionaire's delinquent son. While he is doing that he receives all of his gadgets for the upcoming mission. A CD player that turns into a saw and a book that shoots poison darts, to name a few. Once at Point Blanc Alex discovers that there is a mysterious "project Gemini" happening. He also makes a friend named James. Then one night he hears screaming in the hallways, but when he goes to see what happened there is nobody there.
This is not the end of the book but I am not going to tell you any more. If you want to find out read the book. This is a hair-raising spine- tingling adventure with a great ending. I really liked this book because it kept me guessing right up until the end where everything is neatly sorted out. Watch out James Bond. Alex Rider is the new star.

Assignment: Certain Death
By Mel Odom
Alex Rider, the youngest spy ever recruited and forced into service by MI6--Great Britain's premiere espionage agency, returns in POINT BLANK with a vengeance. Only a few days have passed since Alex's last adventure when he helped catch the man responsible for murdering his uncle, Ian Rider, who had also been a spy. His excuses, a doctor's note no one quite believes, have barely been made before he's spirited off by Alan Blunt and Mrs. Jones, the head of Special Operations. Two deaths of rich and powerful men, one of them a personal friend of Blunt's, have triggered an investigation into the matter of those deaths. One man was killed violently while the other, a VERY careful man, apparently died by an unfortunate accident. The common denominator: both men had problem children, sons that were sent to a new school in France called Point Blanc. Blunt assigns Alex to infiltrate the school on a Search and Report mission. Once there, Alex discovers that the boys attending the school are all eerie, all acting like little puppets who answer every command of the creepy Dr. Hugo Grief and Mrs. Stellenbosch. In no time at all, Alex Rider fourteen year old spy extraordinaire is once more facing a grim and certain death if he doesn't use every ounce of cunning and intelligence he possesses.
Anthony Horowitz is a novelist and TV writer. In addition to the two Alex Rider novels he's written (STORMBREAKER and POINT BLANK), he's also penned THE DEVIL AND HIS BOY, a historical thriller, THE DEVIL'S DOOR-BELL, NIGHT OF THE SCORPION, THE SILVER CITADEL, and short story collections, DEATH WALKS TONIGHT and MYTHS AND LEGENDS. He's written television scripts for POIROT and MIDSUMMER MURDERS, and recently created two television series for the BBC.
The pacing in POINT BLANK rivals the breakneck speed shown in STORMBREAKER. The story yanks the reader along, as if daring him or her to keep up. Although the book is written about a fourteen year old spy, the prose is keen and precise, rivaling any of that in today's thrillers. The book can be enjoyed by young readers as well as adults, and for the very same reasons. The action sequences are some of the best, tight and intricately planned. Horowitz stays just this side of SF and blends the effect neatly into the spy story. His villains are definitely of James Bond caliber, unique and attention-getting while at the same time vile and loathsome. Alex's tools of the spy trade, delivered by his very own Q-type spy inventor, are neat and plausible. Getting to see SAS soldier Wolf (from the first novel, STORMBREAKER) again was great. It seems Horowitz is going to create a world for his young spy and keep it interactive, weaving threads in one book that will come to fruition in successive novels.
There could be, perhaps, a little more dialogue in the book. Reading narration can be fun, but a reader's ears stay pricked for the conversations a character has. Of course, Alex isn't exactly overly verbose, but other characters could talk to him as well. And there needs to be a little more about Jack Starbright, Alex's housekeeper. So far, all the reader knows is that she is from America. What brought her to Great Britain and why does she continue to stay? Maybe the author has even more secrets to unveil.
POINT BLANK is a wonderful novel of action and suspense. Any reader waiting anxiously for the release of Vin Diesel's new movie, XXX, or the new James Bond film will definitely find a story in this book to meet the driving excitement in those properties.

Good Book
By A Customer
Alex Rider is a fourteen year old M-I6 agent that must save the world for the second time. At the academy for rich teenagers that attend at the age of fourteen there is something going on. To very rich men were mysteriously murdered. Both of them men sent the kids to the academy. There is something linking the two. Alex is sent in to figure it out. He is sent in as a student at the academy. He must act as normal as he can and be just like the others. Right when Alex gets to the school he notices that there is something fishy is going on. The kids are acting really weird. They are acting as if they were some sort of slaves, or under a spell. Alex knows he must figure out what is going on. He starts investigating. As he does the mystery reveals itself more and more. What he figures out is that the man that runs the school (Dr. Grief) is trying to take over the world. His plan is to switch out the wealthiest and most powerful men's kids with the clones he made fourteen years ago. He has a plastic surgeon to make them look just like the kids that he is replacing them with. He has made sixteen clones, this way he can have sixteen of the most powerful families at his command making him the most powerful man in the world. After Alex is figuring this all out, his cover is blown. Dr. Grief figures out who he is and takes him hostage. Alex must escape even though it is very dangerous. In the end when Dr. Grief is in a helicopter getting ready to perform his plan, Alex drives a snow mobile after running from Grief's men, he jumps off at the last second so that the snow mobile goes off the jump and is like a makeshift missile and flies right into Dr. Grief's helicopter. I really liked this book. There was tons of action in it. I also really liked the mystery in the book. The character of Alex Rider was really well made.

The action in this book was great. It never stopped, and when it was happening, it got you pumped up to read more. It was as good as watching a movie with fight scenes in it. The book made you feel like you were really there. Such as when Alex is drugged, and then thrown around by three men while he was unconscious but still awake in some odd way. The best action seen is when Alex has to run from Grief's men on the snowmobile while getting shot at and then miraculously kills Dr. Grief.

This book had great mystery too it. It always had you wondering and thinking. What was going to happen? What's going on? You were always on your toes. The whole begging of the book is a mystery, starting off from the two mysterious deaths of the wealthy men. But then as Alex was at the academy it got more and more suspenseful. Such as when Alex was upstairs searching for clues or answers to the riddle he was trying to figure out and he set off an alarm to the door. Two guards came with guns ready to shoot and one of the head ladies. They didn't want Alex going in there for some reason and you didn't know what. Another big mystery was how Alex was going to stop Dr. Grief even when he was being held captive.

The character of Alex Rider was well thought up. Most books write and present teenagers as if they are little kids. It is hard for an author to write a teenager the way they really are because they are not that age, and it was different when they were that age. Alex is very mature and acts almost as an adult. He is quick on his feet and knows what to do, just like when Mrs. Stellenbosch asks him why he was in the place he wasn't supposed to, but Alex looks her straight and the eye and tells her he forgot and he was on his way to the dining hall.

This was an all around great book. It was a good way to make a sequel to the first book Stormbreaker. I never wanted to put down the book when I was reading it. It keeps your mind thinking but also entertained. It has a well written ending to tie it all up. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes reading.

Book 1 of Thorne and Dash
Next Book: Personal Entanglement

Thornwell Shipton is wealthy, uptight, closeted, and an incurable workaholic. A tragic love affair left him terrified of relationships, so he tells himself sex is better scheduled and paid for.

Riley Dashwood is young, easy-going, and comfortable in his own skin. He’s a passionate baker and an aspiring chef, working as an escort to save up for culinary school.

They’re clearly made for each other.

When Thorne hires Dash, it’s lust at first sight. After a few scorching nights together, both men start to wonder if what’s between them is more than physical, but their age gap and resistance to romance make them afraid to change their professional relationship to a personal one. Dash pushes Thorne to admit he wants things he’s denied himself for years. Kinky things. Soft, caring things. Things that force him to open his heart, not just his body. To move forward, one or the other must take a risk and ask for what he really wants.

I can't say enough good things about this book!!! It's a must read.
By Deanna Weatherstein
I can't say enough good things about this book. I absolutely adored it.

The story of a closeted Thornewell Shipton who due to a tragic loss has buried his grief under an impossible workload and effervescent Rile Dashwood who is working as an escort to put himself through culinary school.

Thorne only allows himself Friday nights to indulge with an escort service. When his usual escort retires he is forced out of his comfort zone by Dash. Dash instantly recognizes that Thorne is only existing, not really living. He makes it his mission to show Thorne what he is missing out on, whether he likes it or not.

Dash and Thorne must each come to terms with their growing feeling and decide if they want to leave the safety of a "professional" relationship.

I loved the chemistry between Dash and Thorne. Dash was able to bring Thorne "back to life" essentially while still being sensitive to the fact that he wasn't "out of the closet." The sex scenes were super hot without taking over the whole story. Silvia Violet was able to create a perfect balance of steamy scenes and character build up.

Waiting For The Sequels
By Bo
After the ending of this book I scratched my head because there are to be two sequels in 2016. I cannot imagine what they will deal with because this one is so detailed and so fulfilling in bringing two complete opposites together.

Thorne is a hard-driving, gorgeous (see the cover) 42-year-old closeted Atlanta workaholic and Dash (aka Riley) is a 22-year-old high-end rent boy and aspiring baker whose lifestyles and life goals could not be further apart. That is, of course, until Thorne hires Dash one Friday night. We are quick to discover that they do have something in common--terrific, sometimes kinky, and always very detailed sex.

This book is filled to overflowing with as much sex as one might be able to compare to stuffing a cupcake with too much cream (oops!). But it works, because it forces Thorne and Dash to wonder what life might be for them beyond the bedroom or various positions in other rooms and over other pieces of furniture in Thorne's magnificent apartment.

Their journey to love-me-love-me-not is almost tortuous, but in the end it works, or at least is starting to work. Maybe that's where the sequels are heading. I will be waiting.

Just OK for me

Professional Distance by Silvia Violet

M/M Romance
Triggers: Light dominance and submission
I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

This book was just OK for me. It was very heavy on the dialogue, but not much was said. I felt that the characters were only slightly developed. You only really knew their surface, but didn't really get down in to their own self.

While I enjoyed the story, I thought that it could have been so much stronger. Thorne was a character that I wanted to hit over the head and be like, "what are you doing?!?" He seemed very clueless and despite not wanting to come across as cruel, he did for me.

Then you have Dash. He was a character that I really liked. He was naive, sweet and going after what he wanted. I do wish that we were able to see more of his life without Thorne - especially during the middle of the story.

Finally, the resolution was too neatly packed for me. Plus, what happened with the roommate/former lover? He seemed to just be thrown in to the story without any real substance.
