The authors did an awesome job of teaching the material

Recently I took a college class that used this book as its textbook. The authors did an awesome job of teaching the material. I learned a lot of valuable information which can be applied toward working with young children. However, the text is full of many typos. . The editors did a poor job on this edition. A college level textbook should not have an excessive amount of errors. It should be recalled and revised before any other student pays the high price for this text. I Gave a copy of this letter with a list of the many typos that I noticed to the math department at SPSCC in Olympia, WA suggesting they don't use this book for the students (until it is re-edited). PreSchool-Grade 2–One way to describe this offering is to call it a wordless story with a soundtrack. Johnson switches between interior and exterior scenes to create a visual narrative: a youngster rises and gets dressed; a snowplow clears the road to his rural house; the boy shovels the walk while his father cleans the driveway; the school bus arrives; his mother rushes out with a forgotten present; the smiling child sits onboard anticipating a holiday celebration. Full-bleed watercolor spreads capture the light of a wintry morning perfectly: a deep gray-blue predominates, shot through with a translucent mottled white and accented with small focused patches of vibrant color–a yawning mouth, the date (December 23) circled on a calendar, the gift wrapped in red paper. Descriptive words accompany the artwork, from the boy's quiet Snore and the predawn hush, to the snowplow's Crash Crush Clank and the bus's Jingly Clink. This accomplished offering has a variety of uses and will appeal to a wide age range: younger children will enjoy the action, while those with more developed narrative skills will comb through the pages to create and re-create the story. Every word is a sound in illustrator Johnson's authorial debut, and the pictures tell the story. In his signature style of frosted, crystalline textures and muted tones, Johnson's art shows a young boy waking on a snowy morning and preparing for school, while snow is being cleared away outside. The fun comes from the onomatopoeic text: the "snore" and "purr" of the cozy first image, showing the sleeping boy and his cat, to the "jingly clink vroom" of the closing scene's school bus. Johnson uses visual techniques to amplify each word's meaning. The predawn "hush" appears in dove-gray letters that almost fade into the background, while later, after everyone is awake, the school bus' "honk" is printed in sharp red. This book has a quiet charm that will span age groups. Preschoolers will simply enjoy repeating the sounds and inventing their own, while teachers may want this for early elementary poetry units. Beautiful book

This book appeals to a wide age group of children. Important for a grandparent with limited room in the bookcase. It was given as a gift to a 1yr old, but 2 and 4 yr old grandkids got a kick out of it too. Nice way to introduce books to children with few words in their speaking vocabulary. Beautifully illustrated.

Wishing you joy in the morning

Your average American citizen lives his or her life in a state that is too often blissfully ignorant of the horrors that surround them. Each day they traipse unknowingly into the void, never suspecting that one day, when they least expect it, the unthinkable may happen. They may be required to (gasp shudder) locate a good onomatopoeic story. Oh, I know what you're saying. "It could never happen to me." "Other people get those kinds of requests." "I'm too young to have to worry about searching out the word `onomatopoeic' in a library's on-line catalog." Well fellow citizens, I tell you that unless you prepare for this most awful of occurrences you may someday find yourself seriously and undeniably onomatopoeicless. Fortunately, there is a solution. A solution in the form of one Mr. David A. Johnson. Though he has not yet found himself the proud owner of a household name, Mr. Johnson's work is instantly recognizable to one and all. Even if you are firmly convinced that you've never seen one of his illustrations, prepare to be corrected in this belief. As for his delightful "Snow Sounds: An Onomatopoeic Story", it's a real treat. Capturing perfectly the feel of cold winter mornings, the anticipation that leads to Christmas break, and the experience of having to leave a delightfully warm bed when not a speck of light comes from the sky, the book is a woolly winter gem.

It's the 23rd of December, and a young boy sleeps soundly on a frosty snowy morning. Woken by his mom so that he'll get to school on time, we see both inside and outside the house. Outside, trucks salt, slush, and smoosh the snow on the roads, making it safe for travelers. Inside the boy goes through his morning ritual. These two narratives come together when the boy goes outside to shovel the house's walkway, just in time for the bus to arrive. He almost forgets a Christmas present inside (for his teacher or for himself?) but his mom manages to pass it to him just in time. Told entirely in sounds, everything from the crinkle of the present's wrapping paper to the chug of the snowblower comes to brilliant life when accompanied by Johnson's lively pictures.

We would be amiss if we were to say that Mr. Johnson's book was the first of its kind. I took one little look at "Snow Sounds" and immediately was reminded of Lynn Rae Perkins' wonderful, "Snow Music", published years before she earned herself a Newbery Award. "Snow Music" is perhaps the number one onomatopoeic winter tale. From the whispered words "peth peth peth" that describe the sound of falling snowflakes to a truck salting the road, Perkins captured Midwestern winter to a tee. But Johnson's eastern Connecticut tale is just as snowy and devotes itself to a different kind of telling. While Perkins would include dialogue and even a kind of poetic turn here and there, Johnson sticks to his guns. It's onomatopoeic sound or nothing. Some of these make it infinitely clear that the author knows from whence he writes. Anyone who has grown up in a part of the country prone to snow will recognize the "Whomp" sound that comes when you step outside of your home on a wintery morning in your thick protective boots. Or how about the "Crash Crush Clank" of the plows as they make a berth in the early morning hours? Every sound found here has its place in real life.

And then there is Mr. Johnson's style to consider. I have heard some people say that his images in this book are too light and airy, and I respectfully disagree. The fact that this book was made merely with watercolor and ink on paper boggles my little mind. I mean, let's talk about Johnson's use of light. One of the earliest images in this book is of the boy's house from above before the sun, such as it is, has risen. The family Christmas tree is entirely covered in a thick white coat, but several lights shine through, offering one of the two points of illumination on the page. The other light comes from a distant splatter of white, far far away on some distant road. You might be able to see it clearly, but Johnson has found a way to replicate the look of slight vision-obscuring splatters of snow. He knows how to make droplets of paint burst from the page like actual sparks of pure white light. And his grasp of pre-dawn darkness is unrivaled. I know of no other picture book that has ever done as good a job at truly displaying this time of day. Even when the day has lightened and the boy is going to school, you can still tell that the sky is overcast, even without seeing it. If there were a picture book award given solely on the basis of "quality of light", I don't think there's a title that's come out this year that could even come close to rivaling this book's style.

I don't want to tell you how to spend your money. Okay... fine. That's a lie. I would LOVE to tell you how to spend your money. I would love it if every recommendation I made was followed to the letter and purchased forthwith. If nothing else, however, I would like you to see whether or not you've bought enough onomatopoeic books for your picture book collection. Do you see a gap in this area? Well, how about early morning wintery stories? Do you have a lot of those? Honey, I don't see how you can afford NOT to go out and purchase "Snow Sounds" if you're lacking in either area. It's beautiful and truly without compare. Other books should be able to boast so much.

Too good to be true...

"Too good to be true" was my initial response to this title when an enthusiastic mentor suggested it be added to my reading list. After all, success is supposed to be difficult, right? No pain, no gain! Now, as I type this review, I feel a bit naive by my dismissal of it's concepts at first, but am fully confident that my life is careening toward a positive, uphill path. I have goals now, ambitions, clearly defined targets that are now, not just "wishes," but "can happens" and "will happens."
I'm grateful for my many blessings, my mentor and Ben Sweetland for introducing this to my life. Pick up this book and be blessed.

Grow rich While You Sleep

I like this book a lot because it is not only a way to use your subconscious to help you (i.e. the "Great Mind") but it also tells about the awake mind and how to use it to your advantage. I liked the way the book went. It is a motivational type of book and also presents a way of living positively. It is a book not only for getting ahead but can also be used I think for a way of life. I highly recommend it for anybody needing a good lift!

This is a classic

This book was written years ago, but remains a source of useful advice. It centers around the power of the subconscious mind when activated by affirmations and visualizations. Sweetland was an advice columnist, so he had years of experience in helping people achieve a better. This ebook edition is inexpensive and well worth the read.

Helpful, practical and modern advice

As a bride-to-be wading through the dozens of issues that come with planning a wedding, Marcy Blum's WEDDING PLANNING FOR DUMMIES has already proven very helpful! Though I have several other books geared toward orchestrating the big day, I appreciated that Blum blended etiquette and history with her tips.

Broken down into easy-to-digest chapters with subheadings about issues as diverse as deciding whether to change your name, what to include in welcome bags for guests and how to (tactfully) let guests know that children aren't invited to receptions, WEDDING PLANNING proved especially helpful in guiding me toward the appropriate wording for wedding invitations.

The guide is a quick read that can be picked up at various points in the wedding-planning process -- so whether you're newly-engaged or already locked into a time, date and place, I think there are nuggets of help for everyone. The guide provides tips for same-sex weddings and celebrations across different faiths, too. I'd already sent save-the-dates and made major decisions when I received the book, but I still found plenty of good advice -- especially on how and why to register for gifts. Blum doesn't get carried away with etiquette or "this is how it SHOULD be done," but she does do a great job of explaining what the "traditional" methods are and contrasts them with more modern approaches. Basically: something for everyone.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the process of planning your big day, WEDDING PLANNING FOR DUMMIES could be a valuable resource for organizing your thoughts and creating an event that is meaningful for you and your beloved. It felt very inclusive and thoughtful, and I dog-eared many pages to return to as we get closer to our wedding.

My (future) mother-in-law gave me this book, and boy am I glad she did! Anyone involved in planning a wedding can benefit from this book. It addresses true-to-life issues that everyone deals with during the planning process. This book calmed me down, and helped me feel more secure about the decisions I was making!

If you are in the throes of planning a wedding or want to plan one in the future this is *the* book to take a look at ...

I'm not a wedding person, per se. In fact some of them I've attended are what nightmares are made of. I can think of one in particular that had people dissing it for ages. This was wrong, that was wrong, so-and-so was offended, etc. The last wedding I went to was so awe-inspiring and memorable that I wouldn't mind going to it again. Undoubtedly, the reason it was such an overwhelming success was because of the planning that went into it. No, it wasn't the result of a wedding planner, but one planned by members of both families. They simply did their homework.

Let's face it, aside from watching numerous episodes of "Say Yes to the Dress," I know nothing about planning weddings. I can tell the difference between a ball gown and a mermaid, but formulating an invitation or scheduling the actual wedding day I am and would be clueless if I didn't study up. I will be the mother of the groom and, provided the lovely couple doesn't elope, I'll be planning it with his future mother-in-law. I definitely selected this book with a purpose in mind. Rather than hysterically flounder when the next "big event" comes up, I'll be prepared.

Yes, there are a few of those cartoons we all appreciate, but fortunately most of the visuals are useful ones. For example, there is a step-by-step one of how one ties the "Four-in-Hand Knot" (it's not something he can do.) There are numerous informative sidebars, tips, tables, and cautionary notes to take a look at. The titles of certain sections are understandably cutesy ("Happy trains to you"), but the information is cogent and quite well-organized. In the back of the book is a very expansive index, something I certainly appreciate.

Planning a wedding does take a lot of effort and simply browsing this book gave me an excellent idea why that one wedding was a disaster. On the other hand, it also told me just why the other one was such a resounding success. Planning, planning, planning. As far as I see it, this book gives people options. When you read this book you can make your wedding tailor-made to fit your budget and whatever style you desire. If you find one area you want to focus on, you can always head to the Internet and expand upon it. There are several recommended websites to explore. In a nutshell, if you are in the throes of planning a wedding or want to plan one in the future this is *the* book to take a look at, especially if you are a wedding dummy like me. Take the effort and you might have one of those memorable weddings instead of a disastrous one ... believe me, we've all seen them and they aren't pretty.

About the Author

Woodrow Barfield, PhD, JD, LLM, has served as professor of engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, where he received the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award. Professor Barfield directed the Sensory Engineering Laboratory, where he was involved in research on sensors and augmented and virtual reality displays. He has served as a senior editor for Presence: Teleoperators and Virtual Environments and is an associate editor for Virtual Reality. He has more than 350 publications and presentations, including invited lectures and keynote talks, and holds two degrees in law.
