Terrorist, by John Updike

The ever-surprising John Updike’s twenty-second novel is a brilliant contemporary fiction that will surely be counted as one of his most powerful. It tells of eighteen-year-old Ahmad Ashmawy Mulloy and his devotion to Allah and the words of the Holy Qur’an, as expounded to him by a local mosque’s imam. The son of a bohemian Irish-American mother and an Egyptian father who disappeared when he was three, Ahmad turned to Islam at the age of eleven. He feels his faith threatened by the materialistic, hedonistic society he sees around him in the slumping factory town of New Prospect, in northern New Jersey. Neither the world-weary, depressed guidance counselor at Central High School, Jack Levy, nor Ahmad’s mischievously seductive black classmate, Joryleen Grant, succeeds in diverting the boy from what his religion calls the Straight Path. When he finds employment in a furniture store owned by a family of recently immigrated Lebanese, the threads of a plot gather around him, with reverberations that rouse the Department of Homeland Security. But to quote the Qur’an: Of those who plot is God the best.

From Publishers Weekly
Updike's latest offers up a probing post-9/11 history lesson on America—its mythology and street realities, religious attitudes, and the myriad nationalities that have borne this country fruit. Lane has his work cut out, and for the most part delivers. He contends with multiple foreign accents and American dialects, not to mention gospel singing and Arabic recitations of the Koran. The tale follows a righteous Muslim teenager named Ahmad, an (Irish-Arab) American born and bred in northern New Jersey, and his seemingly inevitable journey toward a domestic suicide attack. Ahmad's Irish mother, Jewish guidance counselor and Lebanese employer/handler are all rendered with distinction by Lane. But Ahmad's accent is odd and hard to trace, almost seeming to contain a Dixie influence. Lane voices an African-American schoolmate in similar style, creating the potential for confusion when the two interact. Phone calls, snippets of TV shows, speeches and sermons are treated with a through-a-speaker effect that is sometimes disconcerting. But it doesn't detract from a generally rich audio experience, one built on diverse narration and ethnically sprawling storytelling.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Not only does John Updike write tales of suburban angst; he also has a long history of ruminating on faith. Critics compare his latest novel to In the Beauty of the Lilies and The Coup except that Terrorist has an intensely contemporary flare. It's almost scandalous to see one of America's literary lions toying with such an inflammatory topic—and in the guise of a thriller, no less. The litmus test of his success with Terrorist is whether he answers the central question: What drives someone to become a terrorist? Terrorist is exceedingly well researched, and Updike writes beautifully. Still, many reviewers criticize Updike for creating Ahmad as a puppet rather than a character. That a puppet is exactly what his Imam wishes him to be begs the question whether Ahmad is a successful creation or just a thin caricature.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Updike is never static; over the course of his long career, he has not only mastered various literary forms but also tackled a wide variety of subjects as material for his fiction. His new novel, swift, sinewy, and stylish, represents another big leap. In the hands of a lesser writer, such a risky topic and premise easily could have come across as presumptuous. Ahmad, an 18-year-old high school student, is the son of an Irish American mother and an Egyptian father. He has taken up the Islamic faith of his father so completely that he is obsessed with distancing himself from the unclean infidel, which is how he views the New Jersey community in which he lives. The high-school guidance counselor, who attempts to steer young Ahmad in a direction he feels is more suitable and productive, is a compelling and oddly attractive supporting character, who, as it turns out, plays a vital role in a deadly plot into which Ahmad tumbles like the naive, easily manipulated adolescent he is. This marvelous novel can be accurately labeled as a 9/11 novel, but it deserves also the label of masterpiece for its carefully nuanced building up of the psychology of those who traffic in terrorism. Timely and topical, poised and passionate, it is a high mark in Updike's career. Brad Hooper

A qualified "thumbs up"
By B. McEwan
This is a tough call, but on the whole I am giving this novel 4 stars because it successfully held my attention, got me engaged in trying to understand the characters' motives and is beautifully written. Having said that, I want to acknowledge that many of the criticisms leveled here by other Amazon reviewers do have merit, primarily the charge that Updike's characters are often stereotypical. Of interest to me is that, while many reviewers complained about the stereotypes of fat wives, Arab-Americans and single mothers, I didn't notice any comments on the characters of African-American school girl Joryleen and her boyfriend, who is named "Tylenol," of all things. But in any case, since the stereotype issues have been well covered by other reviewers, I'm going to let that go and focus on what I see as the positives of this novel, and there really are quite a few.

For one thing, I like the fact that Updike chose this very difficult topic to write about and also made obvious efforts to understand aspects of Islamic-American culture that are doubtless utterly foreign to him. An author of his standing could just coast for the rest of his career, but this writer chose to stretch himself and try to get inside the mind of a character that represents a far more complex America than that of Rabbit, for example. This is an America that we had all better take a shot at understanding, since this is the one we are living in today, and will have to go on living in for some time to come. Believers in Islam are here and they are becoming an ever more important force in the polyglot US -- AND it is pretty clear that many of these folks are severely disaffected from the mainstream culture. *If* this alienation tends to encourage violent actions, then those of us who are of the so-called "majority" culture had better spend some time trying to understand why that is, and think about how we can help these new US residents succeed here. (That's a big IF, since it seems perfectly plausible to me that cultural alienation does not lead to "homegrown" terrorism at all. But for the purposes of this review, I am assuming that it could.)

Another positive of this novel is that it is beautifully written and highly evocative of place. The place happens to be a depressingly urbanized New Jersey, so it's easy to miss the power of Updike's descriptions, but consider this passage: "...the sky cloudless but for a puffy far scatter over Long Island, the ozone at the zenith so intense it seems a smooth-walled pit of blue fire, the accumulated towers of lower Manhattan a single gleaming mass, speedboats purring and sailboats tilting in the bay, the cries and conversation of the tourist crowd making a dapple of harmless sound around them. 'This beauty,' Ahmad thinks 'must mean something -- a hint from Allah, a foreshadow of Paradise.'

As for the criticism that Updike is anti-American and using the character of Ahmad to voice his own complaints, I counter by saying that it's important for us Americans to be more self-reflective than we may find comfortable, and that Updike is contributing something useful by raising important moral and ethical challenges to our behavior as a nation in the world. Take for example this line from pp. 198-9 of the novel: "[True adherents] believe that a billion followers of Islam need not have their eyes and ears and souls corrupted by the poisonous entertainments of Hollywood and a ruthless economic imperialism whose Christian-Jewish God is a decrepit idol, a mere mask concealing the despair of atheists."

Granted, that is powerful stuff and certainly discomfiting. But if one reads any of the world's press at all, it is pretty clear that this is the image that many people have of America, and the challenge Updike's characters are presenting in this novel seem to me to be worth considering. What sort of response shall we give to a comment like the above? How observant of our religious principles are the majority of us here in the US, and what about the economic fallout of our national trade and security policies? I am not saying that I agree with the assessments of the characters in this novel, nor do I necessarily think we should assume Updike does. But it is a view that we might at least consider if we hope to come to peaceable terms with the billions of Muslims who are solid citizens of this and the world's other nations, and who have no hostile intentions.

So, for me, the bottom line on Terrorist is that it's an important book that raises difficult questions that ought to be given some serious thought. We should be glad that Updike chose to write it.

Good but doesn't quite live up to its promise
By Galen K. Valentine
Updike's, "Terrorist" is a timely novel. Newspapers and magazines are still full of the ebb and flow of terrorist and counter-terrorist operations. It is difficult for me, and by extension I think of American society in general, to understand why anyone would choose to become a suicide-bomber. Though they are only a fraction of the terrorists they are the most puzzling. So, I bought Updike's latest book on the strength of his reputation as a novelist and the reviews claiming his understanding of the radical mindset.

On the surface the story is about a teenager, Ahmed, who embraces an austere form of Islam. His mother, perhaps feeling guilty about his father's departure, leaves him to his own devices. An intervention is clearly necessary to save Ahmed from his Imam and Updike chooses Mr. Levy, a sixtyish guidance counselor at Ahmed's high school. The story's trajectory predictably puts Ahmed and Mr. Levy together in the truck carrying the bomb.

Scratch the surface though and you find...well, read on.

Ahmed is largely unforgiving, except, illogically, to the father who abandoned him. He is unapologetic, never needing to justify his beliefs to others or even to himself. His isolation and social awkwardness are not the product of his own attitudes, but of everyone else's. In almost every way, Ahmed acts like any teenager, if a bit more radical. And that is the problem. Remove the radical Islamic element from the novel and you have a story of a generic teenager. If Updike is saying that suicide-bombers are just like "ordinary" people, with the same problems and fears, I think he missed the boat. There clearly is a difference. If there weren't, then suicide-bombers would be far more prevalent. What I had hoped for was a deeper understanding of why an Islamist would choose to commit suicide in a manner that kills as many other people as possible. Failing that, I would have liked to understand why Ahmed as an individual would make such a choice; his social problems aren't enough since so many other children of broken families face the same issues without making such a gruesome decision. I got neither.

The story is structured to propel Ahmed, and by extension the reader, toward his violent final act - exit stage left. But we are robbed of even that. Surprise endings aren't bad. I like them. But only when they result in that, "Aha!" moment when all of the pieces fall together. This wasn't one of them. I felt blind-sided and left wondering just what the point of the book was.

It might seem that I hated the book. I didn't. There were moments when I felt that Updike had looked into the soul of America and understood it. The scenes devoted to Mr. Levy and his wife are masterful. I just felt that he hadn't delivered on the promise of the book.

Updike was, and still is, considered one of the premiere voices of American society. But, "Terrorist" showed me that he hasn't quite mastered the subtleties of another culture. In the final analysis, I'm not sure Updike understands suicide-bombers anymore than I do. He does put a more human face on them. And his writing is superb. In that respect, "Terrorist" is worth reading. But don't expect to gain a deeper insight into terrorism.

Just a little disappointing
By Amazon Customer
A long time ago, I read a criticism of John Updike that said something to the effect that he observes life by stepping out his front door and looking around for a while and then going back in and writing. This is why, when Updike ventures farther afield than his usual subject -- white, middle class, protestant, New Englanders and their relationships -- his voice often falters.

"Terrorist" joins other works like Brazil, S., and The Coup, where Updike attempts to go outside of his comfort zone and explore something a little different. The problem with "Terrorist" is that he is obviously uncomfortable.

First, there are too many different characters and plot lines in the book, almost as though Updike had planned to write a much longer book, or a book from a different point of view than the one he ultimately chose. The menagerie of personalities forces him to develop a contrived (not very believable) set of circumstances that bring all of the characters together for an ending that is less suspenseful, as some critics have indicated, than it is abrupt and tidy.

One character, Hermione, is an assistant to the director of the Department of Homeland Security. Her character isn't explored and exists solely for the convenience of the denouement.

The character of Ahmad, the main character and the most fleshed out, is complex. Updike teases the reader with insight into the conflicted psyche of this devout Muslim who was raised by a Catholic mother in the United States. But it is only a tease. Updike's conception of Muslim devotion tastes too intellectual, too textbook. It is a sympathetic conception, but still one that seems to be lacking.

That isn't to say there aren't redeeming qualities. The prose is classic Updike, flowery sometimes, dark sometimes, always introspective, and always trying to understand why people make bad decisions.

I've read others call "Terrorist" chilling, and I have to disagree. "Chilling" would describe the book I wish Updike had written, the one where, through a strong focus on Ahmad, we see an innocent devotion slowly and methodically corrupted by those who would wage war in the name of God. There is a hint of that here; those who corrupt Ahmad are obviously more about manipulation than about devotion. Unfortunately, the manipulation happens so quickly as to be superficial.

This is not Updike at his best, but it isn't his worst either. I just wish his editor had told him to take six more months to tighten things up.

The content is exceptional as one would expect with any Harrison's book; however, this "paperback" is the thinnest and cheapest product i've ever seen. They literally invested 25 cents into binding an otherwise respectable book!

Applications in Engineering: not just for climate science
By Dan Hughes
The book is not to just for the atmospheric sciences, the material is useful for engineering applications, also. Note I have been verified by Amazon as a buyer of the book.

The book presents the synthesis and grand exposition of decades of detailed work by both the first author and the joint work of both authors. The focus of the authors' work is the atmospheric sciences, and both homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation and growth are covered for both liquid and solid along with applications to modeling clouds and associated atmospheric problems. Additionally, the nitty-gritty details of the physical world that torture beautiful theories are considered, as they must always be. We seldom get to play in the purity of the theoretical.

The coverage is exhaustive in physical phenomena and processes and mathematical modeling details. The literature review and citations are also exhaustive including coverage from the earliest works to recent years. The engineering literature, of course, is not a focus area for the work. It might be a useful exercise to apply the models and methods developed in the book to the experimental data that are available in the engineering literature; especially that concerned with condensation of the liquid phase from its vapor or gaseous mixtures ( humid air, for example ).

As is the general case whenever two or more phases or fluids are involved, the nomenclature naturally leads to many sub-and super-scripts, and combinations of subs- and supers-, and many of these require combinations of mnemonic symbols. That being said, the nomenclature in the book is a model of clarity. The development of the mathematics is another model of clarity. Intermediate steps that are frequently omitted are instead included and detailed descriptions of the justifications of the equation development are spelled out step-by-step. The derivation of the van der Waals form of the equation of state, and its variations, developed in Chapter 3 are examples of the level of details throughout the text that I have read. And this chapter reviews the thermodynamics of pure components, phase transitions, and aqueous solutions.

The depth of development of concepts is generally not available in journal publications. I think the book will serve as a reference text and as a supplement to engineering texts and journal publications. Selected parts can be used to form university courses; the entire book likely cannot be covered in a single academic year.

I have not read the entire book, and I'm certain that digesting the contents of the entire book will be a major undertaking. I have taken an over-all scan of the major features and I have read chapters and sections that discuss those aspects that relate to engineering applications with which I am familiar. A few of these cross-cutting areas include: equation of state for water ( especially the meta-stable states ), condensation and growth of the liquid phase from its vapor phase or gaseous mixtures, effects of turbulence, effects of surfactants, effects of nuclei in heterogeneous nucleation and growth, particle drag, and experimental data for model validation.

I think the coverage of the equation of state for water will be immediately useful in engineering applications in which meta-stable states are encountered. How to handle thermodynamic state, transport, and thermal-physical properties for superheated liquid and subcooled vapor are always an issue in these problems. Generally it seems that maximum liquid superheating limits can approach the spinodal line but uncertainty is associated with the case of vapor subcooling limits and the spinodal line on that side of 'the doom'.

The equation of state for water developed by the International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS) is the gold standard in engineering. The IAPWS-95 version is a recent formulation and this formulation is discussed and its validation up to 2012 is mentioned in Chapter 4. The formulation is computationally expensive and many times the official version is seldom used whenever rapid transients are part of the problem. There are hundreds, maybe even thousands, of engineering-grade versions floating around. I doubt that the pure formulation can be used in GCMs so the approximations presented in Chapter 4 are important. GCMS of course do not consider rapid transients, but they do involve a massive number of grid cells and somewhat long time spans.

The many solid states of water are also discussed in Chapter 4. Ice Nine is mentioned.*

Nucleation and growth of liquid droplets from a vapor, or mixture of non-condensing and condensing gases, are important in several engineering areas such as steam flows in turbines, flows in supersonic nozzles such as rocket propulsion, and flows around airplanes in humid air, among others.

Likewise nucleation and growth of vapor regions from its liquid phase as encountered primarily in boiling flows and to a lesser degree cavitation at lower pressures, are encountered in many engineered systems. Generation of electric power by use of water and its vapor has led to an enormous number of investigations into vapor-bubble nucleation, growth and the subsequent effects of these on the hydrodynamics of the flows in the engineering literature. The phenomena and processes discussed in the book are encountered in the general engineering areas of the multi-phase thermal-hydraulic sciences and their applications.

Many engineered systems involve the use of structures to bound the flows of interest and the interface between the fluids and structures is sometimes critically important relative to nucleation and growth of both vapor and liquid regions. The present book does not directly consider engineered equipment and the effects of fluid-solid interfaces due to equipment boundaries are not consider at all.

The fundamental concepts developed in the book, for both homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation and growth of liquid from its vapor phase, are directly useful in many engineering applications. I am not aware of many cases for which nucleation and growth of the solid phase from the liquid phase is encountered in engineered equipment. That is not to say that such situations do not exist.

The Kindle edition is especially accessible as it takes maximum advantage of HTML with extensive use of links to equations, chapters, sections, and references. My experience so far indicates that all the HTML aspects are successfully handled in the Kindle version. The Kindle edition is also very useful for increasing the accessibility of the numerous equations in the text. And so far all the equations are correctly handled. Checking the mnemonic symbols in sub- and super-scripts is greatly facilitated by use of the Kindle utilities.

A personal note. It happens that I have both the hardcopy and Kindle versions. How and why this happened is a different story altogether. I recommend the Kindle version over the hardcopy. The hardcopy uses a small font size and these are small indeed by the time you get to the compound sub-scripts in long complicated equations. It's been hard to break the I have to hold a book syndrome, but the Kindle is converting me, even after some initial failures when it came to mathematical equations.

A second personal note. Engineers, even those USA converts to SI, will have to be aware of, and beware of, the units used in the book.

Valuable summary of understanding
By Steve Ghan
This is a tour de force on the microphysics clouds. I know of no other book that so seamlessly integrates the body of understanding of the microphysics of clouds. The book lays a foundation with statistical descriptions of cloud microphysical properties, of thermodynamics of free energy, solutions, phase changes, and mixtures of gases, solids and liquids, and properties of water and aqueous solutions. It then considers growth of droplets and ice crystals by diffusion and coagulation, followed by growth and activation of aerosol particles to form cloud droplets. It then addresses the more challenging subject of ice crystal nucleation, providing a lucid summary of homogeneous nucleation before discussing both empirical and theoretical approaches to representation of the various modes of heterogeneous nucleation of ice crystals. Moving beyond nucleation, it explains gravitational settling, condensational growth, and collision/coalescence.

Much of the book is based on the very substantial contributions to the journal literature by the authors, but the book also includes new material addressing various limiting cases that illuminate understanding of regime-dependence of droplet nucleation. However, by building from the impressive work by the authors, it misses important contributions to understanding of population splitting by Nenes and colleagues and the kappa-Kohler representation of hygroscopicity by Petters and Kreidenweis. It also misses recent work by Harrington and colleagues on the processes producing the varieties of ice crystal habit.

Compared with the polular Seinfeld and Pandis book Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, Clouds probes much deeper into cloud microphysics and touches only lightly on mass transfer. Compared with Pruppachaer & Klett’s classic Microphysics of Clouds and Precipitation, Clouds provides more consistent use of symbols and discusses much material published after PK. It is a worthy update summarizing our understanding of cloud physics.

Excellent reference for students and researchers in cloud physics
By Vladimir V. Chukin
REVIEW
by Dr. Vladimir V. Chukin, Associate Professor of the Russian State Hydrometeorological University, on February 10, 2015

The book is a good reference for researchers in cloud physics and remote sensing. The book can be especially useful for the students with good mathematical background. Students can use it as a manual studies and for numerical simulations of cloud microphysical and optical properties, droplet activation, ice nucleation, diffusion and coagulation growth, parameterization of the size spectra and fall velocities, and most other cloud processes. All the methods of calculations of these properties are described in detail, step-by-step, which makes reading easier. A valuable feature of the book is presentation of the modern concepts and theories developed in cloud physics over the last 2-3 decades and absent in the older books.

Indeed, the book combines simplicity and clarity of presenting the material. For example, a detailed description of Wegener-Bergeron-Findeisen process (page 158) is given, allowing to students to create a Python script for numerical simulation of the process in a few minutes.

The thermodynamics relations, used in cloud microphysics, are widely and in detail described. For example, the Maxwell-Boltzmann, Bose-Einstein, Fermi-Dirac statistics are presented. The authors show the boundaries of their usage (pages 56) and possible application for homogeneous and heterogeneous ice nucleation at low energy of ice germ formation (page 299). This detailed consideration of various statistical distributions allows more accurate calculations, extensions to lower temperatures, and shows that the critics expressed in one of the previous reviews by Paul Pukite is erroneous.

Since I am an expert in the field of supercooled droplets crystallization, I'm pleasantly surprised by the high level of presentation of the theory of the ice nucleation. The equations of classical nucleation theory (CNT) for the critical radius and energy of an ice germ (page 318) are substantially generalized, so that they depend on both the temperature and the saturation ratio, which allows to consider both dependencies simultaneously and with account for their mutual strong feedbacks.

Unfortunately, the book does not address the atmospheric electricity, in particular, the mechanisms of droplets and crystals electrification, leading to the appearance of strong electric fields in the clouds. This could be caused by the already large size of the book. It certainly does not reduce the importance of this excellent book.

I would like to express my gratitude to the authors for their work. Special thanks to the head of the library of RSHU Mrs. Elena Astafeva for her assistance in the purchase of the book for the university.

COMMENTS
on the wrong and misleading review by Paul Pukite

As I dealt for many years with cloud particles nucleation and parameterization of their size spectra, I have a few comments on the review by Paul Pukite, which seems to me completely wrong, misleading and based on poor knowledge of both quantum statistics and methods used in cloud physics. The review at Amazon.com site of Paul Pukite of September 5 2014 for the book by Khvorostyanov and Curry contains two main statements, which, he thinks, are wrong in the book.

1) The first statement is "The authors apply Bose-Einstein statistics to the formation of both liquid and ice nucleation. There is no precedent for using B-E statistics in anything other than very-low, near absolute zero, physical behaviors".

The transition from the Bose-Einstein to Boltzmann statistics occurs not at a temperature close to zero K, as Pukite erroneously assumes, but is determined by another condition. Both statistical distribution include the exponent exp(-E/kT). When E ≤ kT, then the more complete Bose-Einstein statistics should be used. Under another condition, E >> kT, the Bose-Einstein statistics is simplified and converts into the Boltzmann statistics. Thus, not proximity to zero K, but the ratio E/kT is the criterion of transition from Bose-Einstein to Boltzmann statistics.

There are several different derivations of the Bose-Einstein statistics in theoretical physics but none of these derivations requires that the temperature should be near absolute zero (e.g., Landau and Lifshitz, v. 5, Statistical Physics, 1958b; Born, 1963; Atkins, 1982), etc. In contrast to Pukite's claim, there are many precedents of using Bose-Einstein statistics at any temperature (including very high) for the particles with integer spin, like, e.g., photons, gluons (a component of protons and neutrons, which compose all the matter that surrounds us in everyday life at any temperature), or Higgs's bosons that give inertia to any particles at any temperature, and to all the other more than 70 bosons- at any temperature. P.W. Atkins in his classical book "Physical Chemistry" (2nd edition, 1982, page 688) writes: "When the particles are ordinary molecules they obey a type of statistics known as Bose-Einstein statistics which can be developed as follows". Then Atkins derives the BE statistics applicable for molecules and other particles with integer spin at any temperature. Then Atkins gives a list of 12 books, where various statistical distributions are derived (it would be useful to Paul Pukite to read some of these or similar books). Then Atkins considers on several next pages applications of various statistics (including BE) for various molecules at various temperatures including 100 K, 298 K, 5000 K, etc. Thus, Bose-Einstein statistics is applied at high temperatures and not near "absolute zero" as Pukite erroneously assumes.

Another example of application of BE statistics is the Planck function, which is simply BE distribution multiplied by the second power of radiation frequency as described on page 55 of the book by Khvorostyanov and Curry (2014, hereafter, KC-2014). Integration of the Planck function (proportional to BE distribution) over all frequencies gives the integral flux of the black-body radiation (Stefan-Boltzmann law), i.e., the integral flux that the body emits at a given temperature T. Well-known calculations show that the approximate emission temperature of the Earth is ~300 K, the emission temperature of the sun is ~6000 K and both temperatures are evaluated based on BE statistics. Is it close to "absolute zero" as Pukite assumes? So, Bose-Einstein statistics is valid far above from absolute zero, and understanding of Paul Pukite of this BE statistics is completely wrong.

Yet another "precedents" of using BE statistics far above zero K are Einstein's (1906) and Debye's (1912) theories of heat capacity of solids. E.g., the heat capacity for ice was calculated with BE statistics for harmonic oscillators in various models with the Debye's characteristic temperature as 192 K or 318 K, so that BE statistics was applied far above zero K (e.g., Hobbs, 1974; Landau and Lifshitz, v. 5, 1958b; Born, 1963; see also pages 114-116 in Khvorostyanov and Curry, 2014), in conflict with illiterate Pukite's statement that it should be near zero K.

After reading Chapters 8 and 9 of the book, I could understand as it is clearly described in these sections of the book that all calculations of the nucleation rates and particles concentrations in this book were done with the traditional Boltzmann's statistics as it is usually done in classical nucleation theory (CNT) (page 293, eq. (8.2.1) and subsequent equations in Chapter 8; page 397, eq. (9.2.6) and page 411, eq. (9.6.2) and subsequent equations in Chapter 9). Possible application and testing of Bose-Einstein statistics is just briefly outlined on half a page as a possible generalization of Boltzmann's statistics at sufficiently low temperatures when critical energy of a germ formation F-cr may become comparable to (kT) (page 299 in Chapter 8). This regime may occur not at very low temperatures close to zero Kelvin, as Pukite erroneously assumes, but at intermediate temperatures due to low surface tension or other parameters of CNT decreasing with temperature (e.g., around 200 K). But Bose-Einstein statistics was never applied for any calculations in this book. Thus, the statement in Pukite's review that "The authors apply Bose-Einstein statistics to the formation of both liquid and ice nucleation" is completely wrong falsification of what has done in this book. Boltzmann's statistics is applied in all calculations in this book, not B-E statistics.

The explanations above show that Pukite's claim that BE statistics is applicable only near zero K is based on nothing (where did he take it from?) and is conflict with all the modern views of physics. Note however that if nucleation calculations were performed in KC-2014 book not with Boltzmann but with Bose-Einstein distribution, they would be valid and could be extended to lower temperatures since BE statistics includes Boltzmann statistics as a particular case. It would be interesting to carry out ice nucleation calculations with Bose-Einstein distribution when F-cr ≤ kT and Boltzmann statistics becomes invalid. This may occur at intermediate temperatures, e.g., 180-200 K, still well above zero K.

2) The second statement in Pukite's review is "Other sections talk about "the older power law and newer lognormal parameterizations of aerosol size spectra" -- these are already out-of-date as modern uncertainty approaches always favor power-law distributions".

This again illustrates Pukite's fundamental unawareness in cloud microphysics. All major types of drop, crystal and aerosol size spectra are considered in the book, including power laws, exponential and gamma distributions, and the quantitative relations among them are established.

However, everybody who deals with cloud microphysics now and has even a minimum knowledge here, from the undergraduate students, to the most experienced experts in this area, knows that the size spectra usually used now for parameterization of drop, crystal and aerosol distributions are lognormal or gamma distributions (see reviews in Chapters 2, 6, 13, 14 in this book KC-2014; Pruppacher and Klett, 1997, and Seinfeld and Pandis, 1998 and many other books and papers). Vice versa, the power law distributions suggested for aerosol at the beginning of 1950's, are very rarely used in the modern literature.

Thus, the claim of Pukite that "lognormal parameterizations are already out-of-date as modern uncertainty approaches always favor power-law distributions" are in conflict with all the modern parameterizations of the size spectra, and shows his complete unawareness about the current literature on cloud physics and parameterizations used in the cloud models of all types- from the parcel models, to cloud-scale models, and to weather and climate models. For example, an Intercomparison of simulations of the recent MPACE (Mixed-Phase-Arctic Clouds Experiment), where several tens leading modelers from all over the world participated, used lognormal size spectra for aerosol and gamma distributions for drops and crystals (Klein et al., 2009; Morrison et al., 2009). Similar parameterizations were used for simulations of ISDAC and CRYSTAL (2004) campaigns (big series of papers of the last decade in JGR and JAS). And no power laws as Pukite again erroneously assumes for the "modern approaches".

First Steps Towards a Green Design
By Marco Antonio Abarca
I am a property owner considering LEED Certification for a building remodel. As a starting poijnt, I have read the LEED guidelines at the Green Building Council website. However, I was looking for something more substantial to help understand the process. "The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design" fills that purpose.

This Guidebook is written by the HOK Architectural firm which has been one of the leaders in sustainable design. The book has three sections. The first chapters are a check list of design guidelines and questions that one needs to explore during the LEED design process. The second section looks at sustainability issues as related to certain building types and the final section are a series of short articles on LEED projects the firm has worked on.

This Guidebook is on its Second Edition and is invaluable for all those interested in LEED certification. It is well written and clearly organized. It is an expensive book but well worth the price. It is a great introduction into what is becoming an important area of design. Highly recommended.

Integrated Review of Two Top Books That Mesh Well
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
Although I normally read books in twos and threes on the same topic to gain varied perspectives, this is the first time I am writing a single review encompassing two books. They mesh together so well that I cannot imagine studying this subject without having BOTH in hand.

The two books are Sun, Wind & Light: Architectural Design Strategies, 2nd Edition and The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design.

Start with the introduction in the Guidebook, which is blessed with a Foreword from Paul Hawken and see especially page 13 where the cost benefits are shown, with 48% energy savings for Gold, 30% for Silver, and 28% for Certified. See also the illustration on page 15 that I have reproduced in the image I am loading for both books: the old decision model was Cost at the top, with Schedule and Quality anchoring the triangle. the new decision model still has cost at the top, but Schedule and Human Health, Safety, & Comfort are on corners of this new pentagon, and the bottom is achored by Quality and Ecology, or what Paul Hawken would call in his books, "true cost" to the Earth and Humanitas.

NOW shift to the Contents and the Detailed Contents of Sun, Wind, & Light. As one reviewer notes, this is a course book. I did not recognize it as such, I saw it as one of the most gifted complete collection of factors to learn and apply that I have ever seen for ANY topic of study. The content and organization of this book is nothing short of Nobel-level "wow." Finish going through this book.

NOW go back to the first 218 pages of the Handbook, and study the checklists and varied helpful boxes and explanations. The rest of the book (217-459) is case studies of specific buildings, each a few pages, that can be left for last.

At this point, I went into the Glossaries and Bibliographies of both books. Each is distinct, neither supplants the other. They must be taken together. I read Glossaries, and Indices, as content, and use them as a form of "second look" (in extremely complex books, this is actually where I start).

NOW go back to the Case Studies in the Handbook, and read each from the point of view of what "take away" lessons are there for your own building.

Reading these two books was a real treat. Outside my office kitchen is a deck with an 11 point system for attracting birds from bluebirds and bluejays to cardinals, gold finches, two kinds of woodpecker, and a flicker as well as the more common birds. I believe in diversity, and I believe that if we don't get our act together and start living up to the ideals of Natural Capitalism (see other recommended books below), our world will go sterile and dark before out great-grandchilden can share in the beauty of this planet. These two books are part of the solution, and I am in serious awe of those who made them available to all of us, and at reasonable prices to boot. Well done!!!

Vital
By Autamme_dot_com
Oracle Corporation, the mighty computer technology company, is everywhere and whilst it is not as ubiquitous or well known as Microsoft or Apple to the average person, there is a very good chance that their life is touched upon quite often by Oracle’s products.

Becoming an Oracle customer is an investment. You do not just go to the computer store and pick up a ready-made system and neither do you ring a local computer dealer and they install something for you within a day or two. So good planning, product knowledge and industry awareness is key; an Oracle consultant becomes a vital cog in the machine, linking customer to supplier, finding the right solution to let the customer’s business thrive and move forward.

So armed with this book you may better understand your Oracle consultant, or any consultant for that matter; or if you are a consultant or thinking of being one you may be a much better one thanks to the author’s advice whereby she lifts the veil on a proven method of teaching consultants that is central to Oracle’s international business dealings.

Oracle wants to be in a business relationship for the long-term. A trusted client relationship is key and whilst there are commercial pressures for both Oracle and its clients and sometimes disagreements, identifying and hopefully resolving any differences of opinion can be key for that successful, long-term “marriage”. The author should know her onions: she created the course Oracle Consulting Services requires each of its consultants to undertake. There is no such thing as a bare pass in Oracle’s world and the company appears to put in the resources and support to aid its consultants who, in turn, aid its clients and prospective clients. High standards are not just expected or desired: they are demanded, it is non-negotiable.

There is no shortage of “be a better consultant”-type books on the market, but this one really found a little niche and hammered its way into this reviewer’s consciousness. If the author is such as accomplished trainer, should one be surprised at the end results? Whilst taken in isolation it is hardly revolutionary, as a package of measures its simple delivery, unambiguous messaging and considered opinion does make it stand out. Investing in quality, demanding high-level responses and behaviour, plus setting the bar very high has its benefits.

Even as a grumpy old industry veteran who has been there and possibly nearly seen it all, this book didn’t disappoint. Is this reviewer too old to become an Oracle consultant: the book was not full of PR-speak extolling the company as “The Place To Work” complete with capital letters, yet it did draw you in as a hard and hectic place to be, where professionalism and quality execution is valued, and where you would go the extra mile and then some, because in the longer-term it is the right thing to do. It is all very attractive and enticing!

Of course, it helps when Oracle does it all under one roof. It can genuinely be a one-stop-shop rather than one cog in many with all the problems that it can bring in the guise of choice and flexibility. As the book notes: “The software development effort at Oracle is a coordinated effort. The software, hardware, database, and middleware teams work together to assure that all of Oracle's products work seamlessly. Oracle's consultants have access to the individuals who wrote the software as well as a host of exceptionally experienced consultants. Oracle consultants frequently have the opportunity to contribute feedback on product performance and recommend enhancements, and so they are deeply invested in the overall success of the software. Oracle offers all its employees access to training in software and industry and soft skills. Any training that is available to customers or partners is generally available to Oracle's consultants without charge. Employees benefit from access to training materials before their general availability to the competition. The last and perhaps most important investment that Oracle makes in its employees is in the area of soft skills. Soft skills are talents that are needed to communicate effectively, excel in productivity, and be the type of person from whom others want to learn. Oracle's human resources team provides a library of soft skills training for all roles and levels of employees.”

So many companies claim to invest in people - their people; they even get nice little logos and certificates to stick on their marketing materials. The cynical amongst us know the value of these certifications. The proof of the proverbial pudding can be in the eating.

Even if your company is much smaller and your marketplace is quite fragmented, you can still potentially benefit from the Oracle Way in your way.

The author does not varnish things, diplomatically noting: “When people hear the word consultant, a number of images come to mind, and not all of them are positive. Defining what a consultant is and is not is important for both you and your clients. Setting the correct expectations early and often is crucial to a productive relationship. Perhaps one of the most difficult skills to learn is soft skills. The ability to gain the trust of others is part of your personality or it isn't. There are a lucky few are who are naturals at this; other people are drawn to them, and so they easily assume the role of trusted advisor. For others, gaining this trust can be a stumbling block. To be an effective consultant, it is imperative that you be able to gain the trust of your client immediately and, equally important, retain that trust. Understanding the skills necessary to become a world-class consultant is the first step toward developing these skills. Being able to determine the areas where you have an opportunity to grow and learning how to cultivate these skills are important steps in the right direction.”

Clearly, anyone can be a consultant and expert; even this reviewer has been known to don the consultant hat, yet there are many things he would equally not consult on, even if the end customer might not suspect a thing. Short-termism is an unattractive trait. One should aim for the long-term and a true partnership. Becoming an Oracle-class consultant? Who knows if that is always truly achievable…

So in short, an excellent, powerful, considerate book that could stand you in good stead for a long time to come. Even if you think you know everything, a check of this book to be certain wouldn’t hurt, would it?

Good for certain types of consultants
By justsomeguyinla
Having been an manager at a large corporation where dealing with consultants was the norm, this book was an interesting read to get the consultants' point of views. Being interested in becoming a consultant myself, I thought the discussions of the soft skills necessary to be a consultant and the examples of dealing with difficult situations during the engagement were particularly useful.

That said, the point of view for this book is a consultant working through a firm selling both the software and the implementation services to go along with it. In the book, the selling of the consulting services has already been handled and the engagement is being managed by a project manager so the skills necessary for both are glossed over. And when the author describes particularly thorny client/consultant situations, the message repeated throughout the book is talk to your manager. Good advice if you are working for a consulting firm, but not so useful for the independent consultant.

In fact, the author doesn't paint a particularly nice picture of the independent consultant, although she tries to be balanced in saying NOT ALL independent consultants intend to steal intellectual property and cling uselessly to engagements for billable hours. As a former client of consulting services from firms that sold us software, I'll be balanced and say NOT ALL of those types of consultants are interested in enforcing opaque product licensing agreements and up-selling.

Good read for the point of view presented. But if you are looking for books to help you start out as an independent consultant or start your own consulting firm, keep looking.

Best book of its kind for the next generation Oracle Consultant.
By Khalil Rehman
I have been working as a consultant in the Oracle E Business Suite/Fusion market since 1987 and can put my hand on my heart and say this is the best book of its kind for would be Oracle consultants.

The chapters are full of punchy information which will help you succeed in your career and survive the inevitable stresses.More importantly it will help you identify if you have what it takes to be a good consultant. I will be making this book required reading in my own Oracle Fusion practice.

Many of the books I have read in the past have been far too generic or aimed at SAP technology or worse still written by salesy people pursing software sales. If you are reading this book it is because you have already made the decision to invest in the software suite and now want to know the different characters you will encounter on projects , their roles and how to best get along with them.
