Simply Outstanding And A Credit To Environmental Toxicology

This textbook is simply an outstanding piece of science. Crosby literally gives the reader a mouthful when dealing with the subjects of environmental toxicology and chemistry.
It is indeed a detailed and indepth textbook which covers the basic scientific foundations of environmental toxicology and chemistry. Additionally, Crosby interwines the two subjects and shows how one is closely related to the other in terms of making adequate scientific risk assessments and writing scientific reviews.
Corsby's work in this particular textbook is nothing short of academically remarkable. This textbook is a must sciendce book for those in the academic, industrial, governmental, and private sectors of the business world. It provides the reader with an insight of how toxicology and chemistry functions in the environmental science fields and how these two subjects are sused in making concise and clear analysis of chemical agents and contaminants in the water, soil, and air. The ecotoxicity affects of these contaminants are reviewed in great detail to give the reader an insight of how environmental pollution affects air, water,and soil and thes living organisms in each area.
In short one can soon surmise that this textbook meets the expectations of the reader and gives the reader a detailed-intellectual background information about environmental toxicology and chemistry. While continuing his focus on life in bars and at the racetrack, these poems enlarge the meditative tone begun in You Get So Alone at Times That It Just Makes Sense ( LJ 1/87). Bukowski remembers the first time he read great authors or heard classical composers; he reflects on old friends, co-workers, and lovers, but with a new gentleness, as in "Darkling," a wonderfully lyric love poem to his wife. Poems such as this make it easier to spot the poetic craft at work behind Bukowski's understated common speech. Finally, the poet's emphasis on reflection and mellowed tone will, one hopes, enlarge the poet's huge but specialized readership.

About the Author

Charles Bukowski is one of America’s best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of two. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for over fifty years. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.

Enjoyable

I'm not a poetry fanatic, but I'm trying to get into it. This was one of two books by Bukowski that I bought to do so (the other being You Get So Alone at Times That It Just Makes Sense). I found both very enjoyable and have moved on to read some of his other works since then. These were the first enjoyable books of poetry I'd read in my life. I would recommend them for anyone who is trying to get into poetry as a hobby, especially if (like me) you are not an English major or aspiring poet, and thus are more able to take these for what they are, rather than evaluate their literary merit from established standards. In other words, I connected with this book on a personal level, not an academic level, and I encourage you to read it if you would like to do so too.

Down and Out in LA

For my taste, Bukowski is a better novelist than poet. Much the same territories are explored in the
poems with less skill.. Still, to one fascinated by accounts of life in various marginal groups (the beat
generation, organized crime, carnies, subway tunnel dwellers, hobos, etc.), these poems by a literate and
observant alcoholic writer were a good read.

The poems in this collection are beautiful because they are so honest and forthcoming that I couldn't put the book down. Old Hank just has a way about him and the way he composes poetry, I'm happy I found him.

These are NOT Flashcards.
They are mimeographed copies that you have to cut.
They are not scaled to the card either.
In other words, they have one sentence on one card, with too much white space.
Another card will have a paragraph with hardly any white space.

Although described as a handbook, this work is more an encyclopedic description of 53 industrial process technologies for producing 18 different petrochemicals. Each process is described in a separate chapter by a different author or authors from one of 18 different companies from North America, Europe, or Japan. The descriptions are mostly brief (averaging 13 pages) and include the following information: general process description, process chemistry, process perspective, process description, product specifications, wastes and emissions, and process economics. The amount of detail varies, but the most common elements are the chemistry and flow diagram of each process, with other details being mostly of a qualitative or descriptive nature. The reader should be aware that there are many other large companies that have patented processes for a number of the chemicals included (notably absent is ICI, one of the largest, so the compilation should be considered representative rather than extensive. This excellent introduction and summary of typical plant operations is recommended as a valuable reference for any technical library that includes industrial chemistry and/or chemical engineering. Interesting, but lacking depth

This book promises a wealth of information for the process engineer interested in Petrochemical Processes. While it does contain a certain amount of useful information, useful for example as introductions to undergraduate Chemical Engineering courses on various of the topics covered, the information presented is not particulary in-depth. Some of the latter chapters on polymerization processes read a bit like the technical information you can find on company web sites rather that as chapters... OK, but not great.

Excellent book!

I am a PhD candidate at University of São Paulo and my research is related to IT Projects in the Public Sector. This book is very instructive and it was very useful for the literature review of my thesis.

This book is also very applicable to my own work as a Project Manager in the public sector. I am a certified PMP® since 2005 and I recently move to the public sector.

The author is very competent in highlighting the main differences between the public and private sectors. The book explains very logically why it is more difficult to manage a project in the conflicting environment usually found in Government projects.

In a class of its own

I am a masters student in Information Studies and bought this book to help appreciate the specific problems faced by public library systems in running successful projects. I am thankful to David for writing an outstanding handbook and text. Very rarely do you come across a definitive or iconic text - I can think of Gujerati on basic econometrics or Orwell on writing plain English - but this one deserves the attention of all academic course designers. It is a comprehensive treatment of the key issues, and applies well to the public sector experience in all English speaking countries and not just in the US. Once more, thank you to David.

Something of a maverick in architectural circles, Vienna-based architect Krier ( Urban Space ) finds most modern buildings ugly and banal, yet he looks to Le Corbusier for guiding principles on linking form to function. Rejecting "organic" architecture inspired by Antonio Gaudi, Krier upholds principles of symmetry and geometry; eclectically, he seeks out examples of good design as he moves from a Yugoslavian fishmarket to an ancient Hindu temple. This chunky primer attempts to formulate a set of ground rules for architects and builders, yet when Krier gets to a discussion of proportions, he throws up his hands, exclaiming, "There are no rules . . . only experience can help us"; he then follows up with minutely detailed analyses of proportions in the human face, seashells, Gothic cathedrals and da Vinci's sketches of horses. Lively, very readable, combative, this delightful tome is generously illustrated with hundreds of photographs, sketches and lovingly shaded color drawings that illuminate key points.

We have come full circle. Seventy-five years ago, at the height of the academic, or Beaux Arts, period in Western architecture, books on architectural composition abounded, spreading the gospel of academic design from Paris to the hinterlands. This book, by an internationally known architect and professor at the Technical University of Vienna, harkens back to this period, parsing its approach into discrete operations and elements based on precedent. The approach is typological rather than holistic or technological, thereby throwing off the yoke of design as a species of problem solving that characterized so much colorless architecture in the mid-20th century.
