About the Author
Honored with the 2013 and 2012 KRob Architectural Delineation awards for Best Travel Sketch and the 2013 Gabriel Prize fellowship for 3 months in France, Stephanie Bower is a Seattle-based architectural illustrator, teacher, watercolorist, and traveling Urban Sketcher.Stephanie worked as a licensed Architect in New York City before gravitating to professional architectural illustration and concept design. And it's SO easy once you understand

After reading dozens of books, taking classes, making all sorts of efforts to understand perspective drawing (and failing!), Stephanie's simple, clear instruction and tips has given me many "aha" moments. Really, why isn't perspective always explained so clearly? Everyone always talks about the vanishing point, but never really explained how to find it. Stephanie does. And it's SO easy once you understand. Everyone talks about foreshortening and converging. Stephanie clearly shows how it works and when to use it.

The book is filled with a wealth of sketches from urban sketchers all over the world - my only small complaint is that some of the drawings are almost too small to see very well. But, the sketches show many different styles and her accompanying analysis of the sketches is SO helpful.....she identifies the horizon or eye-level line and vanishing point in them and draws your attention to all the reasons the perspective works.

The book is small, yet mighty. It's full of pretty pictures, yet educational. It's written simply, yet clearly. It'll be in my sketching bag for quick reference from now on (I've already marked certain passages & folded down pages to return to)!
If you've ever struggled with perspective drawing, this is the handbook for you. If you've ever thought "I wish I could draw a building or landscape and have it look more realistic", this is the book for you. Because I'm here to tell you, Stephanie makes it easy to understand.

Simple and to the point

I took Stephanie's Craftsy class and really enjoyed it. There is some overlap but the book also covers a few extra things like reflections, arches and slopes. It's the first time perspective has ever clicked for me. Simple and to the point. I like that I can refer to things quick and that the topics/examples are succinct.

Great Content; Terrible Font Makes Reading It Difficult

I have given a lot of thought to how to review this book. The content is excellent and the author deserves five stars, The publisher, however, made a terrible decision regarding the font, the font size, and using weak pale ink on white paper. I have to use a magnifying glass to read it which is ridiculous. The author puts together a very helpful book, then the publisher makes a stupid decision about the font and the ink so it is difficult to read. I have noticed this same thing in some other new books. I hope it is not the trend. I know the business schools now teach making money takes precedence over serving the customer. In this case, the publisher has done a disservice to both the author and to those who are buying her book.

About the Author
BENJAMIN PIERCE is Professor of Biology and holder of the Lillian Nelson Pratt Chair at Southwestern University, Georgetown, Texas, USA. He is a population geneticist who conducts ecological and evolutionary research on amphibians. Ben has authored a number of articles in research journals and several other books, including: The Family Genetics Sourcebook; Genetics Essentials; and Transmission and Population Genetics. He is a member of the steering committee of the 21st Century Science Coalition, a group of scientists who support strong science standards for Texas public schools; the President of the Texas Academy of Science; and a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. He also currently serves on the editorial board of Bioscience. Ben has received research and teaching grants from the Natural Science Foundation, the W. M. Keck Foundation, the 3M Foundation, the National Park Service, the Williamson County Conservation Foundation, and the National Geographic Society.

Amazing Intro Book on Genetics

This book provides a wonderful and comprehensive introduction to genetics. I'm not a biology major, but I found that this book is both entertaining and informative. The author describes a wide panoramic view on the genetics, and yet addresses the fundamental concepts in genetics in very clear manner. DNA structure, replication, transcription to RNA, RNA processing, and RNA translation (a.k.a. the central dogma) have been very hard to comprehend and visualize, yet the author explains it very well. Numerous detailed illustrations in the book really helps to clarify the central dogma.

All chapters start with VERY compelling REAL-WORLD cases that tantalizes you on learning the subject presented in the chapter. That makes me wanting to read for more. The writing is concise and clear. The author clearly knows his stuff.

Overall, it is a great intro book. Great for both self-learners and in-class students. Definitely a must buy for those who want to get acquainted in genetics.

For in depth contents: The book seems to be divided into four parts.

1. It starts with principles of classical (Mendelian) genetics with its applications on chapter 1. Then it goes into cell structures, functions, and reproduction with chapter 2-4. Followed by heredity principles of reproduction and how classical genetics fit into the analysis of hereditary traits. The next chapter discusses how classical genetics is not enough -- the author presents compelling cases like lethal alleles, incomplete penetration, and so forth in chapter 5-6. This limitation brings forth extensions and modifications on the basic principles, which is also discussed. The author also discusses other analyses to detect hereditary traits, such as pedigree analysis.

2. The second part is more toward modern genetics: How genes are not independently assorted as the Mendelian principles dictates. The concept of linkage, recombination, and consequently gene mapping are discussed in chapter 7. Followed by Chapter 8 is sort of intermezzo on bacterial and viral genetic systems.

3. The third part is the meat of the book:

Chapter 9 discusses what chromosomes are and how chromosomes abnormalities occur and what type of abnormalities.

Chapter 10 discusses about DNA and RNA structure, followed by chromosome structure in chapter 11.

Chapter 12 discusses DNA replication and recombination with detailed illustrations.

Chapter 13 discusses transcription process, followed by chapter 14 on RNA molecules and processing.

Chapter 15 discusses about genetic code and translation, followed by chapter 16: Gene expression.

Chapter 17 discusses gene mutations and DNA repair.

4. The fourth part is "elective" part:

Chapter 18: Recombinant DNA technolocy

Chapter 19: Genomics (Structural, Functional, and Comparative)

Chapter 20: Organelle DNA

Chapter 21: Various advanced topics

Chapter 22: Quantitative Genetics (very basic single locus regression as an intro)

I needed a refresher on Python scripting for an ArcGIS upcoming project and this book was perfect. The fundamentals were nicely

I took a Python scripting class a few years ago but haven't used it in quite a while. I needed a refresher on Python scripting for an ArcGIS upcoming project and this book was perfect. The fundamentals were nicely reviewed and the rest of the book is full of easy to reference practical examples. I especially like the "How it works..." sections that explain the finer points of the code. This book may be a little challenging for those unfamiliar with object-oriented programming, but I highly recommend it for anyone who has some Python experience.

So many useful examples, user-friendly cookbook... But be aware of version

I haven't gone through all the exercises yet, but so far I liked this book very much. There are many useful examples which you could readily apply to your daily jobs (if you are GIS user), such as exporting a map to pdf or image file, automating printing process, and creating geoprocessing tools, etc. Many of the examples are not too long to follow, and very user friendly (the book comes with all the necessary electronic files, including codes). Considering the fact that the first edition came out only in February 2013, this second edition came out rather fast; I guess there's much update since then and also many requests for the updated version (so, authors,thank you for your quick action!). One drawback was that I'm using ArcGIS ver. 10.1 (the book is written for ver.10.3) and some scripts did not work (e.g. Chapter 6, reading from a text file and plotting wildfire points). For those parts, ideally, the authors could have clarified which script would or would not work in which version of ArcGIS. Overall, I would recommend this cookbook to those who have taken intro Python class for ArcGIS, and want to explore further.

Perfect for beginners

It's a perfect book to start learning arcpy. The exercises are interesting but not too complicated so you don't feel frustated and every step is explained so you can't get lost.

After doing an arcpy online course (beginner level) I purchased the book Arcpy and ArcGis- Geospatial Analysis With Python but I think it's not the best option for beginners. I recommend Programing ArcGIS with Python Cookbook for beginners.

Starred Review. Epstein, a public health specialist and molecular biologist who has worked on AIDS vaccine research, overturns many of our received notions about why AIDS is rampant in Africa and what to do about it. She charges that Western governments and philanthropists, though well-meaning, have been wholly misguided, and that Africans themselves, who understand their own cultures, often know best how to address HIV in their communities. Most significant is Epstein's discussion of concurrent sexual relations in Africa. Africans often engage in two or three long-term concurrent relationships—which proves more conducive to the spread of AIDS than Western-style promiscuity. Persuade Africans to forgo concurrency for monogamy, and the infection rate plummets, as it did in Uganda in the mid-1990s. On the other hand, ad campaigns focused on condom use helped imply falsely that only prostitutes and truck drivers get AIDS. In addition, Epstein examines what she calls the "African earthquake": social and economic upheaval that have also eased the spread of HIV. Epstein is a lucid writer, translating abstruse scientific concepts into language nonspecialists can easily grasp. Provocative, passionate and incisive, this may be the most important book on AIDS published this year—indeed, it may even save lives. (May)

Some countries in Africa report that approximately one-third of their adult populations are infected with HIV. Epstein wondered how such a state of affairs came about. Seeking answers, she contracted with a biotechnical company to go to Africa and work toward discovering an AIDS vaccine. What she subsequently learned exploded some preconceived and widely shared notions about AIDS, about how African culture all but ensures its spread, and about what might be a deceptively simple answer to the complex question of how to stem that spread. Her absorbing report reveals governmental inefficiencies and medical bureaucracies and social structures that have done nothing to slow the epidemic's pace—and may be accelerating it. Besides the epidemic's social and medical aspects, she discusses the business of AIDS, and she examines the mystery of how the HIV infection rate dropped some 70 percent between 1992 and 1997 in Uganda and the Kagera region of Tanzania; she believes that the invisible cure involved in that plunge provides clues to resolving the issue of AIDS in Africa generally. An important contribution to addressing this ongoing tragedy

I'm an American doctor working in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. I can attest to the substance of much of the material presented in this book and the importance of its message, specifically that norms of sexual behavior in this culture need to be discussed and changed for prevention efforts to begin to be effective. As the author aptly discusses, numerous aid organizations, flush with good intentions and funds, seem to operate on the periphery of this central issue. One of the most disturbing lessons of my time in the midst of this horrible tragedy is the realization that the stigma attached to this disease in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa remains so severe that many people prefer to die than to find out that they have AIDS, a point the author seems to get across through with many informative anecdotes. The fundamental thesis is that we need to begin to engage the leaders within these societies at a fundamental cultural level regarding relationships and sexual behavior. No small task. I would highly recommend this book as the first read for someone trying to understand why AIDS is so unbelievably prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa. As of today, for every person we enroll in antiretroviral treatment in rural KwaZulu-Natal, five will be newly infected. It's very depressing to see so many people dying from a preventable disease--1,000 people die of it every day in South Africa alone.

hiv prevention: now and how

"As a woman living with HIV," says Beatrice Were of Uganda, "I am often asked whether there will ever be a cure for HIV/AIDS, and my answer is that there is already a cure. It lies in the strength of women, families and communities who support and empower each other to break the silence around AIDS and take control of their sexual lives." With a vaccine against HIV far off in the distant future (if at all), and with treatment of AIDS in the two-thirds world difficult, expensive, and limited in effect, the name of the game in HIV-AIDS is prevention. But in places like Africa, which is the focus of Helen Epstein's book, prevention is not as simple as it sounds. As she notes in her appendix, measles, syphilis, tuberculosis, and other entirely preventable diseases still kill millions of people even though they can be treated for pennies.

Why has HIV-AIDS ravaged eastern and southern Africa like no place on earth? "In 2005," she writes, "roughly 40 percent of all those infected with HIV lived in just eleven countries in this region-- home to less than 3 percent of the world's population." In some of these countries the infection rates have hit 30 percent, decimating the general population, while in the west, for example, rates hover at about 1% and are generally limited to specific demographics like gay men, intravenous drug users, and commercial sex workers." Theories abound about this discrepancy, but Epstein argues a narrow point, that Africa's problem is not profound promiscuity, or even the normal culprits of high risk groups like prostitutes or truck drivers, but instead a social phenomenon of "concurrent partners." That is, Africans do not have more sexual partners than in other places in the world, and nowhere near as many as gay men among whom infection rates are exponentially lower; but they do have a small number of sexual partners concurrently, at the same time, rather than one at a time or sequentially. This has set the virus loose among the general population like a runaway train.

And why has prevention been so elusive? Epstein appeals to what she calls the comprehensive "social ecology" of denial, silence, shame, adverse gender roles, and stigma about HIV-AIDS. Western-initiated and donor-funded programs will always be less successful than listening to Africans themselves and their own suggestions about how to address the problem. Uganda, of course, has been the amazing success story in this regard, and the subject of bitter debates about why. In 1989 Uganda had one of the highest infection rates in the world, but from about 1992-2002 the infection rate dropped by two-thirds. The key to the success, argues Epstein, was not in the billions of dollars from the west, but from the "collective efficacy" of a "shared calamity," by people helping each other and talking openly about the scourge. In particular, "partner reduction," she says, and not the much vaunted condom use, helped Ugandans to address the cultural phenomenon of concurrent partners. Partner reduction, as one worker described it, is thus the "neglected middle child of the ABC approach" of abstinence, fidelity ("be faithful"), and condoms. Zero Grazing, as Uganda's president Yoweri Museveni called for, is thus the silent cure already available, however valuable other prescriptions.

Epstein, a molecular biologist who has written widely on public health issues, combines rigorous science and the anecdotal evidence of substantial field research. She's clearly as comfortable with and interested in meeting with a dozen African widows under a mango tree as she is in the latest results of a demographic study. Her book has received strong reviews in the New York Times and the New York Review of Books (where her mother was a co-editor before she died), and also a rebuttal of sorts on the home page of UNAIDS that was provoked by her somewhat conspiratorial stance toward research that she argues they ignored because it didn't fit their partisan ideology.

A CLASSIC WORK

The most important book published on AIDS in a long time, and one of the most important books of the year. If you liked Rachel Carson's Silent Spring or And The Band Played On, you will love this book. It is readable, impassioned and brilliant, and despite its savage denunciation of the failures of the West to deal with the AIDS crisis, it is an essentially optimistic work. Publishers Weekly in a starred review said it will save lives, and that is not hyperbole. I urge anyone who is interested in the greatest medical crisis of our time; anyone who is interested in Africa; anyone who is outraged by the failure of the UN, the WHO and the Bush administration to deal with this tragedy, to buy this book and give it to your friends. It is the kind of book that will change peoples' minds and will move continents. It will be read for years to come...

This work was took four years, and involved thousands of hours reading and research, to provide a view of the topic from practically every possible angle: statistics, economics, finance, law, history, and so on. And even though I already had several years experience in the field, its creation took me on a journey of learning.

Although written by a practitioner, the book is extremely well referenced and suited for academic environments (the bibliography and glossary are 15 and 40 pages long, respectively). It takes a non-geocentric approach, and strives present broad principles instead of focussing upon the situation in any one country. Even so, it is most relevant to the UK and USA environments, for which the most information is available.

Comments received from colleagues have thus far have included "awesome", "art", and "bible", as I really tried to draw upon my writing abilities to create something that "is in a totally different league" to other works. Amazing contents..

I have experiance of developing scoring models over 11 years. But I never have seen like this reference book which has most important things. It contains from the start of scoring models to the end of scoring models, so if you have interest in scoring models and retail credit risk management then never miss this oppertunity for you..

Overpriced and Overrated

This is by no means a bad book, but do not let the high price tag fool you into thinking this is the best out there. It is very comprehensive, although everything is either at an annoyingly high level or an unhelpful low level, with nothing much between. You can get a feel for WHAT people do when they create scoring models, but not necessarily WHY or HOW they do it.

I think the worst feature is that the book is very uneven, almost like it was written by two people: one experienced and non-technical, the other highly technical but working in a different field. The non-technical parts are highly readable, if somewhat wordy and slightly vague. Then, in parts, the book switches to "statistics 101" mode and throws a lot of jargon at you which - even for those who can understand it - is not terribly enlightening. Maybe the author had someone else write those parts, or maybe he copied heavily from some statistical papers without really understanding what he was writing.

Don't get me wrong: this book is a pretty good overview. It is certainly no worse than 90% of the subject matter out there and the high level parts are very engaging. But if you were thinking paying >$150 would get you something more in depth or a different perspective or approach then you will probably be disappointed.

Had potential, but choppy writing and hefty page count hurt.

I requested this because of the pretty cover and the blurb. What I expected was some light, fluffy, fun. Unfortunately, The Lost Boys did not deliver. I struggled to keep reading before I hit 100 pages! I've learned a very valuable lesson though. Always check the page count! This puppy was over 500 pages, unnecessarily long.

Now, the idea for the story had lots of potential. Who doesn't love handsome gentlemen ghosts, graveyards, witchy magic, and boarding schools? My problem was with the execution. The writing style was choppy and the 16 year old MC came across much younger to me, maybe 12? I was wondering if this was more of a middle grade book, but a few mature scenes quickly settled that it's definitely not.

I'm not a writer, but I can certainly identify what works for me and what doesn't. It was overwritten. I don't mean that it had purple prose, but that each scene was described to death. Simple scenes are detailed & repetitive, not counting on the reader to make connections. When someone yells or shoves somebody, we assume they're angry. Being shown and then told in great detail all the time makes the reading drag, so this book was a slow go for me. I believe this story could've been pulled of if it had been edited & chopped down by about 200 pages! I know that's harsh, but it's easier to read less than stellar writing and still appreciate the story if it's a quick read.

I'm giving it 2 stars because this appears to be written by a very young author and I see potential that wasn't quite tapped.

Not as good as I expcted

17 year-old Joe Grey has moved to a new town because of her mom's new job. Her immediate attraction to Tristan has her returning daily to the grave yard where they meet. Soon after arrival she finds out she'll be going to a boarding school and dreads leaving him. One fateful night will affect their future. Will Tristan and Joe be together?

I was pretty excited to get this book. I felt like the premise was good and looked forward to discovering the secret. The author was detailed oriented. There were very few errors. I felt the beginning of the book was really pretty good but I found I lost interest in the highschool drama about 1/2 way through. By that point, I just wanted to finish it.

I did struggle with this book for several reasons. One, I'm not 100% the author knew who she wanted her audience to be. Over all the language and story telling style seemed junior high'ish. The book focused a lot on the going's on at the highschool and highschool drama. But then she throws in minor sexual jokes and themes and alcohol use which, in my opinion, lends it to college age reader.

The other flaw with the book is the unrealistic and/or forced plot creations. For example, when she arrives to school she's accidentally assigned a boy's room. Not only doesn't she or the boy mind but her mom signs a release form to allow her to continue to share a room with a boy. Although times are changed from when I was young, but there's no way I'd been allowed to do that. Nor, despite being a tomboy, would I have been comfortable sharing a room with a boy I just met. That's just one example.

Overall, the book wasn't horrible. It just really needed to move along faster with less filler and have a more targeted audience. I wouldn't either encourage or discourage someone to read the book. I did noticed this is intended to be a trilogy, I'm not sure I'd read either of the two books.

Somewhat Entertaining But Too Ridiculous to Deserve a Higher Rating

I was never a fan of Stephenie Meyer despite her overwhelming fame brought on by the Twilight series. Thus, the tagline in the blurb did more damage than good when it comes to drawing my attention. But one can hardly ever walk away from a ghost story that easy, even though now I wish I had done just that.

Instead of being a heartbreaking mystery romance filled with suspense and tension, The Lost Boys is merely a cliched high school drama that uses ghosts as characters to explain away all the ridiculousness and absurdity one can undoubtedly recognize from the plot. It also suffers severely from the rather infamous trope of "everyone is drop dead gorgeous" by introducing characters that are simply too perfect to be true (This might have fooled and dazzled me in my earlier days, but no-no, not now). Though to Lilian Carmine's credit, she did manage to gain some of my respect by giving a few of them their unique personalities.

As a whole, I found The Lost Boys extremely lacking in the mystery department, but that is partially my own fault since nowhere in the synopsis has promised me anything of that nature. As a matter of fact, the biggest mystery has already been revealed before you even go into the book. Being a "romantic tale of a girl meets ghost", I spent more time than I wanted drowning in boredom while waiting for our MC, Joe, to find out that this handsome young boy she is secretly crushing on is actually a ghost. Even with this lengthy build up, their romance still felt halfhearted but interesting enough to keep me going.

For a 500+ pages book, The Lost Boys is surprisingly easy to read. It didn't give me the feeling of moving a mountain across my shoulders, but it could still be condensed further regardless. Particularly, a round of character elimination would be greatly beneficial as well as removing all the unnecessary subplots. Additionally, Carmine's writing also left much to be desired. Although quite readable, her lack of experience and skill with her craft is fairly obvious to notice, though nothing out of the norm to how you would usually expect from a debut author.

Without a doubt, The Lost Boys can be enjoyable for many others, so long as you have the proper mindset and expectations before starting it. But for me, it failed to provide excitement and unpredictability for which I was seeking. Nevertheless, I will probably check out the next book just to see how things have progressed, but that will be a story for another day.

INCREDIBLE!!

The back covers reads: "The great plan of salvation is a theme which ought to occupy our strict attention, and be regarded as one of heaven's best gifts to mankind." -- Joseph Smith

You can judge a book by its cover with this one. There is much symbolism on the breathtaking front cover, and the hard cover format had pages that were literally so soft. It was a work of art, a top quality production - well worth the extra $7 for the hard cover.

Having finished reading this book, I can say that "it's about time" that these doctrines have been restored and are made available in print. They were clearly taught frequently among the prophets at the time of the Restoration, in great abundance. The doctrines have been interspersed through teachings in the interim, and are well-documented among those writings of our latter-day scholar, and esteemed Saint, Hugh Nibley.

This book is a compilation of quotes from obscure and not-so-obscure sources, compiled logically and brilliantly by an author who refuses to engage in commentary so that he/she might preserve the integrity of the words as they stand on their own. Each reader is able to, even invited to, explore the doctrines presented at the level at which they are comfortable. This isn't a book that you can read once and expect to comprehend the breadth and depth and grand scale of the nature of God. It will require several readings, and much prayer. But the journey is well worth it. I personally believe these are some of the great and precious truths that have been taken from us. If the sealed plates, and other forthcoming records contain even a fraction of the gems found within this volume, I pray that the day they are made available to us is very soon.

This book is not for the casual student, or one who expects to have a passive seat as a learner. Each concept that I learned opened up a tenfold increase in the questions which came into my mind, many of which were answered as I continued throughout the pages, and many that were not - but have been answered through prayer or revelation. I still have more questions. But this book has done what the quote on the back suggests from Joseph Smith - given us a coherent framework with which to ponder upon the plan of salvation. Truly, it is heaven's best gift to mankind.

Our temple ordinances speak of eternal lives, yet never before have I understood its great importance to our journey during mortality. I find the contents of this book--which are unaltered words of God himself and His prophets--to be the most liberating, invigorating, and motivating doctrine that I have ever comprehended.

Again, it will take some work. But if you truly seek to understand the nature of God (and consequentially yourself in the process), this book is required reading. I am grateful the author had the courage and dedication it must have taken to compile this incredible, well-organized set of quotes. It is a most treasured book in my collection. Well done!

Interesting perspective on an ancient issue

What the prior reviewers fail to disclose ( probably intentionally) is the true thesis of this book. That thesis is that an integral part of the Plan of Salvation in Mormonism is the Doctrine of Eternal Lives by which the compiler of this volume means a "Mormon" variation of what might be called reincarnation. This is more accurately known as "multiple mortal probations". That is after death we may ,if we wish, return to mortality to learn the lessons we yet need to know to more fully achieve our ultimate divine potential.There is virtually no commentary or text other than quotes of generally recognized early church members or leaders. The material is arranged topically but in a manner so as to be very readable. It is edited in such a way as to clearly set forth the compiler's own conclusions even if those conclusions are never expressly articulated. I find it a valuable compilation of first hand material on an arcane subject.
