Thought-provoking
By E M Haines
Covers an important topic.I meet far too many people whose learning from 10+ years of instruction in mathematics is that they can't do it. It is hard to believe that continuing to do what we have always done will fix this problem and Boaler's book provides evidence-based, practical alternatives.Would have benefited from more rigorous proof-reading (at least in the Kindle edition), e.g. FOIL is a mnemonic not a pneumonic. The chapter on sex differences relies heavily on works that are controversial.

Introduction to Functional Programming Systems Using Haskell (Cambridge Computer Science Texts), by Antony J. T. Davie

Functional programming, is a style of programming that has become increasingly popular during the past few years. Applicative programs have the advantage of being almost immediately expressible as functional descriptions; they can be proved correct and transformed through the referential transparency property. This book presents the basic concepts of functional programming, using the language HASKELL for examples. The author incorporates a discussion of lambda calculus and its relationship with HASKELL, exploring the implications for parallelism.

Review
"...a very readable and understandable introduction to functional programming. It provides many concrete programming examples written in Haskell and discusses several design principles that seem to be unique to functional programming. I would recommend this book to all professional software developers for its discussion of software design using higher-order functions and streams. The book is perfect for an undergraduate course on functional programming. Haskell compilers are available from the research community, so students can get hands-on experience. Graduate students should be able to read this book on their own for an introduction to functional programming, the lambda calculus, polymorphic types, and combinatory logic." Reginald Meeson, ACM SIGPLAN Notices

Excellent Introduction
By D. Grady
Davie's book is aptly named; although he briefly outlines the important syntax of the Haskell language, this is not intended to be "How to Program in Haskell." This book is an introduction to the ideas of functional languages rather than a tutorial on the nuts and bolts of programming. As a result, many of the techniques of programming in Haskell are presented, but in the broader context of his explanation of functional programming rather than in the more narrow, "In Haskell, you must do x and y to accomplish z" sense. I thought that this was very effective; although I have used functional programming systems in the past this was the first time I had read a clear presentation of their theory and history. Parts of the book are very dense and make for heavy going, but overall I think Davie has done a very good job of introducing the reader to the idea of a functional programming language.

Interesting language
By wiredweird
The Haskell programming language is part of the backlash against "big" languages such as Ada and C++. Although its syntax is not (not necessarily) like Lisp, it follows in the Lisp tradition of maintaining a tight bond to its roots in the formal logic of mathematics. And, like Lisp, it presents itself as a strict functional language.

Haskell has versatile syntax, allowing many different representations of any expression. It also supports high-order functions, or functions of functions. You'll also find a Prolog-like pattern matching facility (without the full capacity of Prolog's unification engine), which enables some kinds of overloading. The language supports "modules" as well, a limited kind of scoping mechanism intended to support programming in the large.

If "functional" programming is a term you haven't heard before, it means that, ideally, a program runs entirely in terms of expression evaluations without side effects - the program has no state except for transient state on its stack. This ultimately makes it a poor match to the real world. Even the ideas of storing a Haskell program on disk and holding its output pixels on screen violate the stateless paradigm, since that storage would be long-lived state. In the end, a functional programming language must violate its stateless purity to be relevant to commercial problem solving, or must leave state management to some part of the system outside of the language. The latter doesn't really solve the problem of state, it simply pushes the problem around - i.e. to some other programming language.

Haskell is an interesting exercise in language design, embodies many useful concepts from formal logic, and gives up many of the features that make it difficult to reason about programs in rigorous ways. It may have given up too much, though. When I try to picture using its techniques to solve systems of linear equations, write device drivers, or process a payroll, I end up with a very unpleasant image.

An great second book for students of Haskell
By Samuel Danielson
Conceptually the content of this book can be divided into three major sections. The first is a well constructed overview of Haskell which, though not suitable as a primary tutorial, is organized in a building block style that clearly explains the core concepts of the language and their syntax. Examples are of minimal complexity and fit each purpose well while remaining free of yet unintroduced material. The other two sections, theory and implementation, are interleaved to present the material in a constructive way. The introduction to lambda calculus marks the first deviation from a pragmatic study of Haskell, however, proofs are largely omitted leaving mostly definitions, relevant theorems, and explanations. This book served as my introduction to lambda calculus and I found it somewhere between impenetrable and relaxing, which is to say that it was very helpful despite requiring a second read. The chapter closes with a desugaring of Haskell into the simpler constructs of lambda calculus. Next the properties of applicative languages are studied and implemented (in Haskell) on a SECD machine. Then lazy evaluation is studied and techniques of implementation such as SECD, graph reduction, SKI-combinators, and the G-Machine are covered. Following this is an overview of program transformations and optimizations with a brief summary of ongoing work in the field. The three conceptual topics; language, theory, and implementation are covered uniformly so there is a decreasing completeness to the Haskell presentations as abstractions pile up e.g. there is no concrete implementation of lazy evaluation. Instead the operation of machines is described with graphics or combinators in the notation of lambda calculus. This book covers implementation adequate for an intermediate command of Haskell while serving as an excellent introduction to the theory behind functional programming.

My Not So Perfect Life: A Novel, by Sophie Kinsella

Part love story, part workplace drama, this sharply observed novel is a witty critique of the false judgments we make in a social-media-obsessed world. New York Times bestselling author Sophie Kinsella has written her most timely novel yet.

Everywhere Katie Brenner looks, someone else is living the life she longs for, particularly her boss, Demeter Farlowe. Demeter is brilliant and creative, lives with her perfect family in a posh townhouse, and wears the coolest clothes. Katie’s life, meanwhile, is a daily struggle—from her dismal rental to her oddball flatmates to the tense office politics she’s trying to negotiate. No wonder Katie takes refuge in not-quite-true Instagram posts, especially as she's desperate to make her dad proud.

Then, just as she’s finding her feet—not to mention a possible new romance—the worst happens. Demeter fires Katie. Shattered but determined to stay positive, Katie retreats to her family’s farm in Somerset to help them set up a vacation business. London has never seemed so far away—until Demeter unexpectedly turns up as a guest. Secrets are spilled and relationships rejiggered, and as the stakes for Katie’s future get higher, she must question her own assumptions about what makes for a truly meaningful life.

Sophie Kinsella is celebrated for her vibrant, relatable characters and her great storytelling gifts. Now she returns with all of the wit, warmth, and wisdom that are the hallmarks of her bestsellers to spin this fresh, modern story about presenting the perfect life when the reality is far from the truth.

“You can be anyone you want to be.”
By E. Bukowsky
Twenty-six year old Katie Brenner has decided to reinvent herself. Having been raised by her down-to-earth and protective dad on a farm in Somerset, for years she has dreamed of becoming a chic Londoner. Now she shares a small and unprepossessing flat with two roommates, and works for a pittance at Cooper Clemmow, a "branding and strategy" agency. It is too bad that Katie (who calls herself Cat) must answer to the stylish and sophisticated Executive Creative Director Demeter ("De-meeee-ter") Farlowe, a dismissive and scatterbrained genius who is known for her conceit, self-centeredness, and insensitivity. Things look up when Katie meets Alex Astelis, a handsome, funny, and charming hunk. However, Katie happiness is short-lived. She finds out that Alex is Demeter's boss, and rumor has it that the two are an item.

Sophie Kinsella's "My (not so) Perfect Life" is an engrossing tale of a good-hearted, intelligent, creative, and self-deprecating Cinderella who yearns to go to the ball (in her case, to be accepted among trendy Londoners). In addition, she would like Prince Charming to fall in love with her. When Katie's prospects take an unexpected nosedive, she temporarily shelves her ambitions and returns to her rural roots. Back with her dad and his partner, she learns the value of being true to herself; reaching out to others; resisting the false lure of designer labels and other status symbols; and embracing those who genuinely care for her. She also finds out that appearances can be deceiving. "Having it all” may be an illusion.

Sounds corny, no? Fortunately, the clever dialogue, off-beat characters, and zany plot machinations are lively, engaging, and frequently hilarious. Kinsella's accomplished storytelling has so much zest, warmth, and sweetness that readers should be captivated by "My (not so) Perfect Life," a breezy and heartwarming fairy tale.

Kinsella explores female relationships in London .. and on the farm .. lovely, fun and charming
By audrey frances
When one needs absolute escapism, with its charming surreal lives, there is no one better than Sophie Kinsella. In this lively tale, 'Cat' is finally living her dream life. She's moved from the family farm in Somerset to London! Where she has a job! And flatmates! Yes, she is a naif who is maybe a tad too 'on', but she also has talent. She's funny but not a fool, a young woman ready for her first real love .. or first true heartbreak. I liked that Cat was more concerned about her family and her career than about fashion. She had a nice friendly first person voice and throughout the book we watch her learn and grow. But at the same time it's lively and charming, a fun read.

Cat is the lowest of the low at a design firm .. but she's determined to make friends and present her ideas to her sort-of idol, her boss Demeter. We see Demeter through Cat's eyes and we also see the relationship between the two women change and grow, which is nice. (I'm not sure that the author has explored this relationship before, at least not in the Kinsella books, and I liked it.)

The commute is an hour and forty minutes .. and her flatmates are nightmares .. but Cat thinks she can push through to success. And then something horrible happens and then something enlightening and then .. It is a formula that works for Kinsella who, despite the predictible layout renders a charming story with authentic characters and protagonists you can root for. There are scenes that make you laugh out loud. It is a classic Kinsella book and I cheer whenever I hear another has come out.

slick light entertainment
By Alan A. Elsner
Readers of this rather long piece of fluff will learn the word "glamping." Yes, this is a thing -- glamorous camping. When you're glamping, there's no tent to pitch, no sleeping bag to unroll, no fire to build. Glamping is a way to experience the great outdoors without sacrificing luxury.

So it's our usual Sophie Kinsella protagonist, feisty, determined, cute as a button Katie from a farm in Somerset trying to make it in a branding company in London. Squished into a tiny flat, enduring a horrific commute in her high heels and trying to scrape enough money together to eat are the least of Katie's problems. She longs to rebrand herself as "Cat" and live the cool London life she's always dreamed of -- but the reality is very different and making things much worse, she has a monster boss in the form of Demeter Farlowe, who is written much in the vein of "The Devil Wore Prada."

To make a long story short, Katie is brutally downsized (don't worry, this is not a spoiler, it's on the back cover of the book) and has to retreat and recoups at her farm in rural England where her father is trying to get a new "glamping" business underway. Katie is soon applying the marketing lessons she's learned in London to make it a roaring success. Then the horrible Demeter appears and it's payback time. And flitting through the pages is Katie's love interest, the sexy but not very character-developed Alex.

All this ends as you would expect....and one doesn't need to include spoilers to predict how it will end. But at 430 pages plus, I felt the whole thing was a bit bloated. This is light entertainment -- nothing deep, nothing thought-provoking, just harmless escapist fun. It's well written and put together by an author who is a professional who knows what her audience wants and always delivers it. I enjoyed it -- but I kind of hated myself for doing so.

Review
The images are beautifully drawn and labeled, and it is clear that significant time and effort have gone into the organization of the material. In addition to clear and unique illustrations, this atlas departs from the typical anatomy atlas by combining explanatory text with the images, providing summarizing tables, and giving clinical applications for the material. This atlas would be a good choice for the reader interested in neuromusculoskeletal system reference. ..The narrative works to enhance understanding of a given topic by referring the reader to other sections of this atlas that continue to elaborate on specific points. For the physical therapy, athletic training, or medical student trying to master the specifics associated with muscle function, the 2-adjoining-page organization of tables with illustrations of the muscles is a feature that would assist studying this material. Other features of this atlas that are particular strengths include an excellent index, concepts needed to understand anatomy, clear illustration and annotation, overview of basic embryology, overviews of the autonomic nervous system, illustrations identifying landmarks that can be easily palpated, bones and joints, neurovascular and lymphatic systems, the addition of schematic illustrations to clarify hard to visualize structures, many common and some rare clinical conditions, some select MRIs, and a number of other special topics. Overall, a beautiful and well-organized atlas of musculoskeletal anatomy.. The narrative provided, along with functional grouping of muscles and clinical application, have resulted in a relatively novel presentation of the musculoskeletal system that most students will appreciate.--Journal of Orthopedic Sports and Physical TherapyA useful addition to the library of any clinician interested in the musculoskeletal system. It contains beautiful illustrations of musculoskeletal anatomy and clear, descriptive legends, many of which are detailed. This volume offers more value than a typical atlas because of the substantial amount of functional and clinical information that is included. ...It warrants consideration as the required atlas for any gross anatomy course for physical therapist students... It also would make a fine supplemental resource for preclinical laboratory courses that emphasize skeletal and muscular anatomy and for any physical therapy clinic's reference library.--Physical Therapy, June 2006This atlas contains superior illustrations of the musculoskeletal system of the trunk, upper, and lower extremities, as well as a concise but very informative overview of general anatomical concepts. Notably, the musculature - functional groups provides a fact box on each muscle, as well as a unique schematic that clearly demonstrates each muscle's action. The neurovascular system - forms and relations subsection of each of the chapters provides a compelling demonstration of anatomical relations and concepts of innervation. The intention in creating this text was to provide an atlas that would guide students in their study of anatomy, stimulate enthusiasm, and provide a reliable reference for experienced students and professionals. This Thieme atlas fulfills these intentions. For the novice, the general anatomy chapter provides a very descriptive overview of anatomical concepts with brief text and good diagrams. In the following three chapters, the image quality is quite impressive, illustrating excellent anatomical relations. The fact box included on each muscle provides easy reference to origin, insertion, innervation, and action. The illustrations are clearly labeled...The index is appropriate and easy to follow. For experienced students and professionals, clinical application, cross sections, x-rays, and CT and MRI scans are provided to further emphasize the clinical relevance of anatomy. Additionally, biomechanical presentations for functional groups of muscles are well-described and

Best musculoskeletal anatomy text out there.
By Kindle Customer
I am a D.O. and this book was the recommended anatomy text book in medical school. It's better than any other text including Netter for muscular anatomy. It organizes the muscles into functional groups so you can study them more easily and on top of that it includes rubber band schematic drawings that really help illustrate the function of each muscle. I thoroughly recommend this text for bone and musculoskeletal anatomy study.

Not much I can add, but...
By J. Greene
This is a great book, and I recommend all three if you can afford them. Otherwise, just get Netter or Grant.

This book has one major flaw (caused me to miss an exam question): On page 503, there is an illustration of the medial malleolus and associated neurovascular structures. The illustrators got the order wrong that these structures pass behind the medial malleolus and deep to the tarsal tunnel. From anterior to posterior, they should be: Tibialis posterior, flexor Digitorum longus, posterior tibial Artery, tibial Nerve, and flexor Hallucis longus (Tom, Dick, AN' Harry). However, the artery and nerve are posterior to the flexor hallucis longus muscle in the illustration. Minutia, I know, but just FYI for you M1s. EDIT: I am happy to say they have fixed this illustration for the single volume Thieme atlas by Gilroy.

Also, the fact that these atlases are in a three book series means that when you are covering the thorax, you have to use two books to cover everything on the test. It can be a little tedious, and Netter and Grant atlases have it all integrated into one book.

This book, however, has a lot of cool information in the writing, and together with the outstanding and NUMEROUS illustrations, make it perhaps the best choice for any student in the medical field.

Fantastic Atlas!
By Paclitaxel
It is the best anatomy atlas I have ever seen.
Compared with Atlas of Human Anatomy: with Student Consult Access, 5e (Netter Basic Science), it is more detailed.
Compared with Sobotta - Atlas of Human Anatomy Single Volume Edition: Head, Neck, Upper Limb, Thorax, Abdomen, Pelvis, Lower Limb, 14e (Sobotta Atlas of Human Anatomy, 1 Vol), it has a better and clearer view.

Despite the fact that this atlas is one of the series of THIME and it is more expensive than other atlas, I still recommend medical students buy all this series books.

Following are all series books,
Neck and Internal Organs (THIEME Atlas of Anatomy)
Head and Neuroanatomy (THIEME Atlas of Anatomy)

I Inspire, by Neerja Malik, Megha Bajaj

A must-read for anyone who has ever rolled their eyes skyward and asked, “Hey God, is there like a road map to life?”

Srinagar was dressed in her autumn best. Like blushing brides, the trees were clothed in bright red, their graceful limbs swaying eagerly forth in the wind, and then, as if suddenly recalling their modesty, holding back just a bit.

Neerja’s grandmother was busy in the kitchen. The smell of pickles enticed the chubby little girl and she walked in to watch the elderly woman create magic with her wrinkled hands. Every now and then, she would steal a piece of sour green mango, flick it into the air and catch it in her mouth. The taste was heaven… pure heaven.

“Oh nani, I love you!” Neerja sighed. “This is the greatest treasure you could ever give me!”

“Oh, no, my little one”, replied her grandmother, beating masalas into a bowl to marinate the cut raw mango pieces. “Raw mangoes are not the greatest treasure.”

“I give up Nani! Tell me, tell me now, what is the greatest treasure?”

Equal parts humorous and soul-stirring, the deeply personal and disturbingly honest I Inspire reveals how the human spirit is much, much bigger than anything it endures.

Neerja Malik, a double cancer survivor, works with cancer patients to spread awareness. She was instrumental in setting up the Apollo Cancer Support Group at the Apollo Specialty Hospital, Chennai. She is also the trustee of the NGO ‘Sankalp’ that works at providing free education to the girls.

Zest for life
By Pratibha Jain
Neerja Malik's zest for life is beautifully captured in this book. Megha Bajaj's pen captures Neerja's child like enthusiasm, her never-say-die attitude and the innate courage to face life simply because of one essential quality - to see life as pure magic. "When one comes to term with death, can one actually live," is a great formula for acceptance of destiny as well as the courage to transform pain into gain. How to deal with pain within oneself and how to share it with others including your own children - much to learn, much to learn. A story which surely touches the inner core of the human spirit and its battles.
