Vivid imagination and fascinating prose

I still remember, opening my father's dusty trunks filled with books in our attic and being introduced to the strange world of Morgana Royal. It was Corelli's indomitable Morgana who inspired me to choose a career in Engineering, and the notion that for a woman nothing is impossible if there is a thirst for knowledge.
Through the years Morgana, with her great intellect and sarcastic wit has continued to be my inspiration. Corelli's prose is rich and vivid., and she makes Morgana believable and endearing. Bitterly cynical, the book rings with criticism of human society and men in particular, but it is Morgana who captures the readers imagination. The story contains some fantastical arguments about Miss Corelli's mystical beliefs, but still makes good reading.

My favorite book about the auditory system

This was one of the books required for my Doctor of Audiology coursework and it quickly became my favorite source for the anatomy and physiology of the auditory system. Initially, it was difficult to read. However, after reading the book for a short time and becoming more comfortable with the author's style of writing, it became much easier to process.

While not directly clinically useful, I believe it is a must read for all Audiologists as it provides an extensive look into the auditory system and why we do what we do in the clinic.

Not a masterpiece

Also this book is a classic in hearing research it is not a very understandable one. The author deals much to far with basic hearing things and cochlear processing, extends content to the maximum, that's not what I expected and to make the picture perfect the language is more difficult then easy. I don't like it, maybe your money is better invested in the Introduction to the Psychology of Hearing.

Not well researched

The idea of the book is really great and it's also funny,
But the translation is not well researched and I only knew that the german translation wasn't.
For example the spelling of "Scheiße" isn't "Sheiße"
And other words really don't exist in the german language. No idea where they come from. And if german isn't researched that good what then about the languages that are way more difficult.
And it's also bad, that for the languages like Chinese are no phonetics or something.

Nice idea, but the implementation is not so good!

Looked it through, wouldn't trust it. The curses in my native language (Czech) don't make sense. I guess it's the same with other not that common languages. Someone just used Google Translate and printed it..

An insightful and definitive guide on learning about and starting your own hydroponic garden

After seeing a really unique hydroponic system in an acquaintance’s home recently, I was intrigued. I didn’t have any knowledge whatsoever on the subject but have been gardening at my house for years. Seeing her system filled with useful herbs that were thriving in water inside her home was something I automatically gravitated toward. Once seeing that setup I wanted to make hydroponics a hobby as well, but didn’t really know where to start. She referred me to this guide and just a few days later I purchased it and digested the information.

As a guide on all the necessary info for how to learn and get started in hydroponics, this book is quite definitive. I learned the varying types of hydroponic systems, the advantages and disadvantages compared to traditional gardening, what I can grow, and even how to build a simple hydroponic system before advancing to more complicated mechanisms. The guide is succinct and authoritative, leaving no room for unnecessary filler talk or chatter. I learned a tremendous amount of information in a relatively short period of time.

As an avid gardener, I'm always looking for new ideas for gardening. Each year, I try something new with my garden. Last year, I planted banana trees (musa basjoo variety), two years ago I planted peanuts, three years ago I defied my latitude with growing palm trees. This year I'm going to be growing a hydroponic garden. Specifically, I want to grow a hydroponic garden to grow the ingredients for salsa. This book was fantastic. I especially enjoyed the visual examples and different methods of hydroponic gardening. If you're interested in gardening or want to try a new/fun way to grow your plants, this book is for you. About the Author

Russell Brand is a comedian, journalist, TV and radio presenter, and actor. I found *My Booky Wook* laugh-out-loud funny, but not for the faint of heart. Brand's honesty is almost child-like at times, except that he's dealing with very adult topics like depression, sex addiction, and drug use.

That honesty was precisely what made the read so compelling for me. Brand has a unique gift for non-pompous self-reflection, and refuses to bowdlerize his life just because it might offend some. His description of what it's like to take heroin deserves a place right up there with The Velvet Underground's song. It's loving and funny and unapologetic, while still acknowledging the horrific damage that addiction brings.

Brand's prose, like his personality, is deliberately flamboyant. I found myself feeling that, by all logical reasoning, I should be put off by his deliberately Dickensian flourishes. But self-knowledge saves all, and Brand combines his rococo prose with colloquial diction, self-mockery, and traces of his real, non-elite accent. In this regard, I kept thinking that Brand's style was akin to that of a very dirty P.G. Wodehouse.

The result was (dare I say it) addictive. I couldn't put the damned book down, and after finishing it I had to immediately lend it out so I wouldn't re-read it a million times.

Like all great comedians, Russell Brand turns his personal pain into comedy. Given the variety of individual senses of humor, it's impossible to guarantee that you'll find this book funny. But if you're not easily offended, you'll probably be laughing. Even if you are easily offended, you can treat this as a very honest memoir of sex and drug addiction, and be shocked that Brand tells it as a funny story.

Enter his cloak of love

Russel and I just flew across country together. I giggled the whole way, although he was certainly frustrating at times. Unfortunately, he was only in my kindle. (It was a bit embarrassing when the flight attendant wanted to see what I was reading, and it was a pretty raunchy part for a silver haired woman to have exposed on her lap, so to speak.)

Russel, I love you! You're a mess, but damn can you write! So far this is the only book on my Kindle requiring me to look up the meaning of words. YAY! I thought I knew what avuncular meant, but I was wrong. He made my flight fly by and increased my vocabulary! I hardly even noticed the seat in front of me grazing my forehead and the guy next to me taking up half my seat. Be well, Russell. My love to your Mum.

Funny & bitter at the same time....brilliant!

I did not know who Russell Brand was (no...I never watched "Big Brother") till I checked into a London hotel for the holidays and saw him on a holiday talk show. He is hysterically funny in a sharp, no-nonsense, "no sacred cows" manner. This book is a memoir written in a rather disorderly manner but nontheless extremey funny. His recollections and comments are fresh and at time tear jerking. A fast read, it kept me up all night. Even Americans who do not know who he is will enjoy his recollections of experiences growing up, his several stints in rehab (for various causes) and show-biz trials. Really enjoyable, I can't wait for him to write something new!

Forest Forensics

Forest forensics is CSI meets AMC. This is wonderful book, if you live in the northeastern US or Canada and spend time in the outdoors. You will come to see the landscape around you in a whole new way - to read the history of the impacts of hurricanes, farming, logging etc. The book has clear descriptions tied to beautiful color plates, so you understand exactly what he's talking about. For example, only large rocks in rock wall indicate that the adjoining land was a hay field, small rocks indicate regular crop cultivation which causes small rocks to surface. Upon first read, even before you take to the field, you will begin to say "Ah ha", as you recall seeing various forms of rock fences, tree forms, or stumps. Not only does he help you read the events of the past, but date them. This book is very accessible and just plain fun. And best of all, while this book helps you answer lots of questions, your observations will reveal a new level of subtly and leave you with even more questions. If you enjoy the woods, whether kayaker, backpacker, weekend hiker or skier, buy this book. You will see the world around you in a new way.

Worth the 10.35 ounces in my pack

I liked the two other books I have by Tom Wessels (Reading the Forested Landscape; The Granite Landscape) and thought I would try this one. It's a small book but the coated paper adds weight for the 160 pages. The weight is not a major issue for me but probably would be for long-distance hikers. There are 64 single page photos and 19 photos across 2 facing pages. Photo quality is just fine to very good in nearly all cases. Only two photos didn't work well for me - 4A2 Plow trough adjacent to stone wall, where the break in slope you're supposed to notice unfortunately falls directly in the gutter between the two facing pages, and 5A1 Subtly pillowed and cradled ground - it just looked like pretty flat and featureless ground in this photo, covered with pine needles and oak leaves. It is not easy to photograph subtle landscape features in forest light and shade, so to have issues with only 2 photos in over 80 is not strong criticism. An earlier reviewer was offended by the observation that a flat-topped stump suggests the area was logged. That's a real example certainly, and while there are also more subtle points raised, focusing on them misses the main value of the book to me. It is rare that someone with Tom Wessel's experience in landscape interpretation (or anything else) provides people without that background with the opportunity to participate in his thought process, by sharing publicly what observations he thinks are important, and what his decision-tree logic looks like as he thinks his way through the evidence to answer such questions as what happened, in what order, and when, in an area that is now forest. The heart of the book is in a 7-page section at the beginning, outlining observations/evidence related to Agriculture; Old Growth and Wind; and Logging and Fire evidence. The photographs and brief text are designed to clarify points made in the decision tree statements. You don't need a PhD in forest ecology to use this book, and if you had one you might find it overly simple but as a geologist, it works for me. I found myself saying "aha" as I looked through the photos - thinking of one example after another that I've seen in New England woods over the past 50+ years. His observations about sheep's wool being thick enough to keep them from feeling the barbs in barbed wire fences even helped explain why our bus driver in southern Iceland had to pull over one afternoon a few summers ago and go running back up the road, to untangle a sheep that was caught halfway through the fence along the highway.

I think it's a deceptively simple book, and one that I'm glad to have. I recently met someone who teaches at an environmental school in Jackson Hole, who had studied with Tom Wessels. She confirmed my sense that he would be a great person to spend time in the field with. Until that ever happens, the Forest Forensics book will have to stand in.

A fun read

This little volume was of interest as an addition to my personal naturalist library. It was a bit more focused on New England than I anticipated which limits its value here in the Blue Ridge but the general principles are of value.

There Can Be Only One (and this is the first ...)

This is the first novel concerning the Highlander, Connor MacLeod. (There are several concerning his successor, Duncan, in which Connor also appears.) We are introduced to the concept of The Game, in which a race of Immortals vie to be the remaining one in a battle of good, evil and "off with his head." If you are a fan of the Highlander TV show, I recommend reading this book and seeing the first movie -- it'll help you understand where Duncan comes from (and why Endgame was such an awesome movie).

Get the Director's Cut DVD - forget the book

Since the current weapon of Connor MacLeod is a katana, you would think that the authors might have used the word once in the book. The second time I saw "Samurai sword" I knew I should have just watched the movie again.
The authors not only botched some of the most poignant moments of the story, but I wasn't impressed with the description of the final battle between MacLeod and the Kurgan.
I think the Director's Cut version of the original Highlander movie is one of the best written movies I've seen. Maybe that's why this novel fell so far short of my expectations.
If you can get a copy of the script to Highlander, you'll get a much better feel for the themes to the movie - avoid this book!
Oh well, at least I learned how to spell pendejo.

An excellent book from an excellent movie

Back in the mid-80's I saw "The Highlander" at my local movie house and fell in love with it. The book is well written and adds some extra girth to the story that the movie (even in its uncut version) did not include. The greatest appeal about Highlander is the concept of immortality and the implications of being able to live for an infinite period (as long as your head remains attached that is). The book will keep you riveted and any lover of fantasy or science fiction would appreciate this work.

About the Author
Dr Graham Cairns, UK, 1971, is an academic and author in the field of architecture who has written extensively on film, advertising and political communication. He has held Visiting Professor positions at universities in Spain, the UK, Mexico, the Gambia, South Africa and the US. He has worked in architectural studios in London and Hong Kong and previously founded and ran a performing arts group, Hybrid Artworks, that specialised in video installation and performance writing.
 
He is author and editor of: El arquitecto detrás de la cámara, Abada Editores, Madrid, 2007; Deciphering Art, Architecture and Advertising; selling to the sophisticated Consumer, Libri, Publishing, London, 2010; Reinventing Architecture and Interiors - a socio-political view of building adpatation. He is currently editor of the academic journal Architecture_MPS (Architecture, Media, Politics, Society).

Architecture of the screen

This book sets out to upturn some conventions about how architecture appropriates film. It states that it turns a scenography approach into a cinematographic one. It does. I found it revealing in its general theme and in its details. The different (and very different) sections, are each full of fascinating details and unexpected connections between film, architecture, philosophy, art etc. Sometimes, it goes too far and the author let's his range of knowledge get in the way of a clear argument. But the range of subjects linked into the overall theme is impressive. It's very well and clearly written despite using some obscure references - and the footnotes are useful in explaining some theoretic concepts and technical issues. It's equally about film and architecture and doesn't seem to favour one or the other. Well worth the time (and sometimes difficulty) in reading.
