The Seminal Work on Mind Control.

This book may date from 1961, but it continues to be an essential work for understanding the techniques of mind control that continue to be utilized by authoritarian governments as well as by destructive cults. Those who have been watching with horror the crackdown by the Communist Chinese government on the peaceful falun gong religious sect will recognize in Lifton's book the same tyrannical mindset as it operated at its origins. Obviously, not much has changed in 40 years. Especially worthwhile in this book is the description of the eight conditions underlying any thought reform program. "Milieu control", for example, is the imposition of an entire controlling environment that permits a person no unapproved interactions, no free time, and no access to unapproved information. "Doctrine over person" is a state of affairs where, in any situation where ideology is contradicted by real experience, the ideology, not the experience, is believed. This can lead to a situation where a fictitious construct -- "the People" -- is defined differently from that of real people, who are not considered to be "real" people if their experience differs from ideology. Lifton calls this viewpoint "dispensing of existence." Cult survivors such as myself (a former 10-year member of Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church) will recognize these and the other conditions Lifton enumerates.

Refutation of Prior Review - This Is An Excellent Book

Upon seeing the review below, from the reader in Rio de Janeiro, I had to write my own thoughts and share them. As a former cult member myself and current volunteer in anti-cult activism, I can personally attest that what Dr. Lifton wrote about concerning destructive groups and mind control absolutely exists. The famous chapter 22, where Dr. Lifton lays out the famous "eight criteria", to me isn't a chapter in a book but how my adolescense was in this particular group. It's true; it exists. The reader from Rio said that mind control was a failure; well, ultimately, yes it is, total control over a person's mind isn't 100%, and won't last forever. However, individuals and destructive groups (cults) know how to exploit mind control techniques to allow them control over a person's thoughts and actions long enough to get that person to do what they want, and often when people leave cults they suffer psychological damages for years afterward. This is also not about West superior over East; Dr. Lifton also chronicled how many Chinese were hurt by the mind control imposed by the Communists. All in all, this is a terrific book about mind control and its damaging effects; I highly recommend it.

A Must Have

This is a delightful addition to any Witch's library. I wouldn't be without it or the Old Girls Book of Spells.

In addition to the items Cal lists for the spell kit I added my pendulum, a gold coin, a small candle holder, two cones of frank and myrrh incense with a small clay disk on which to burn them, and upgraded the thread to some light weight cord. Everything fits beautifully. I got so many requests for kits that I purchased some tins the exact same size as the Altoids tin and made several kits and have sold them to very grateful Witches on the go. Everyone in my family carries one.

I actually thought this book would be different. I did read it through but unfortunately became a bit bored.
I had thought the spells would be more something someone could do anyplace, anywhere. But you are told from the start to have a little portable altar (she gives instructions for this) that you keep with you.
A lot of the spells require finding a private place.

In the beginning she does offer a spell requiring only a rubber band so you can 'stretch time' when you're late. This I found helpful.

If you can find this book in the library by all means look through it. But I wouldn't spend the money if I hadn't already.

Original and imaginative, this story has a rich world of gibberish proper nouns. Every land, character, reference, and idea has a convoluted proper noun despite how little it may have to do with the story. The characters were interesting to follow, but the story is excruciatingly slow to develop because of the intricate exposition required to make sense of this world. He spends half the book explaining one type of magic, then trumps it by suddenly throwing in another type of magic, which wouldn't be so bad until the most ridiculous deus ex machina inexplicably ends the book without any hint of how or why.
I know this is part of a trilogy. The explanation is probably in the next books, but the sudden mystical ending undid any importance to the rest of the book. The characters he'd spent so long to build had nothing to do with the catharsis and hence undid any sense of urgency or heroism. I won't be reading the next two books to find out why the first book didn't bother explaining it's unsatisfying resolution.
It was unique and kept me interested, but I won't be recommending this book. 5/7

I think this is the author I've been waiting for

You know what I remarked - out loud to the cat, if we're insisting on complete transparency - when I was about 1/5 of the way through this book? "Holy [cow], this is an honest-to-god epic! Not one of those "epics" that are only called that because the author doesn't know how to write a book without throwing everything but the kitchen sink into the plot, but a real one! Parallel story lines that tie together in the end! New interesting magic in a new interesting world! This is AMBITIOUS!"

(For anyone who's wondering, the cat made a strange little growly noise and left the room. I'm fairly sure that his reaction was unrelated to the topic of conversation.)

I'm hesitant to say it - I do hate being wrong - but I think I just stumbled across another author with bestseller potential. From very early on, I thought - internally this time - this book kind of tastes like Sanderson. Later on, I picked up some Robert Jordan textures too. At one point, I headed over to the author's Goodreads profile and, lo and behold, there under his biggest influences are Sanderson and Jordan. And since I wasn't done with the book yet, I was a bit skeptical. I mean, those are some pretty big shoes to fill, and though I'm sure lots of people try, lots of people just end up sounding like they're trying to sound like Sanderson and Jordan (or whoever) rather than finding their own voice. I was liking the story so far, and I found myself hoping that Islington wouldn't be influenced by these other authors so much that the story suffered. I mean, ambitious is good, but TOO ambitious is just going to fail.

I needn't have worried. This story is a great one, and it's great not because it sounds a bit like a Sanderson fantasy, it's great because James Islington has some real chops.

I wouldn't call it perfect. Perhaps the most frustrating thing about this is the amount of world building. Understand, there are no info dumps, and there's enough world building that, for the most part, we're able to follow along without being totally confused, and we can trust that our questions about what X means will be answered eventually. However, I spent a fair amount of time in the first half of the book wishing I understood the background a bit more than I did. How the magic works. How society is structured. What the history was. Where all these countries are. (Perhaps part of the problem stems from the naming conventions, which were foreign enough that all the weird words were running together without getting saved in my brain with an identification.) The amount of exposition included was a very valid artistic decision, and it could very well have been a better choice than the alternative, but...maybe just a bit more balance would have been nice.

If well-used plots bother you, you may not care for this. The story itself is the epic fantasy standard: world on the brink of disaster, ancient evil escaping its prison, nobody believes me, etc. Some of the specifics were pretty familiar too. They're being chased, their only chance is an ancient abandoned city with an evil of its own because the bad guys won't follow...now, where have I heard that before? I personally don't mind revisiting a trope if it's done well, but some people really do. In any case, I think that even though I was reminded of other works at various points in the story, the book is fresh enough and well-written enough that just about everyone will be happy with how it all turned out.

Oh, what else? The book is meaty enough to support its sweeping scope. The characters were above average, I think; nuanced and likeable, realistic, with their own unique voices, though none of them particularly blew me away. The dialogue was well-written. The editing was good. Not quite perfect, but still good (and better than most!). The magic was involved and interesting without being overpowered. Islington avoided the 100% good vs. 100% evil thing; the book was full of gray areas. And there were a handful of surprises.

I have a feeling James Islington is going to have a spot on my shelves alongside the other epic authors of this generation - Brandon Sanderson, Pat Rothfuss, Brent Weeks... If you're a fan of epic fantasy, I strongly suggest this book. So many fantasies try to be epic, think they're epic, but so few actually pull it off. This one does.

Pleasantly Surprised

This book was definitely a surprise. It just kept showing up on my Amazon.com feed as a book I would like, and with all the good reviews I decided to give it a chance. I'm very glad I did.

This book is epic, great impending darkness to unite a broken world to fight. The characters were great. I can't say I LOVED any of them, but I really liked almost all of them. They were complex and interesting. Plus, I'm not a super huge fan of the trend in modern fantasy which is to have characters that are not good or bad. I like books that have really deep, honorable good guys, and interesting, evil bad guys. This book did that...and more (can't say without spoilers)!

The world and the magic were intriguing and complex. Granted it was nothing really new, but that doesn't mean that it was not good. It was really good, just nothing I was not familiar with as a reader of fantasy. The complexity of it lies in the scope of the world. There is so much history, so many characters, and they traverse such a large landscape, it is difficult to keep it all straight. The author has posted a character reference and a map on his website, and that was extremely helpful...as well as my X-ray feature on my Kindle (I had to use this alot..."who was that guy again - XRay")

One of the most standout features of this book to me was that it was clean...really clean. No sex, no vulgarity. There was definitely some violence, and even a fairly gruesome scene or two, but if you've read Hunger Games, you've read stuff much more gruesome and disturbing than anything in this book, violence wise. I'm so grateful for an author who once again shows that you can write a really good book and it does not have to be full of boundary pushing vulgarity! I was able to come away from reading the book with a sense of "Wow, I really liked this...and I didn't have to get dirty to enjoy it!"

And a final bonus...the book is like $4 on Amazon! Go get it and enjoy. I think I'll start it again soon to pick up some things I'm sure I missed :)

Dr. Knapp offers an International ABA Program assisting families from other parts of the world to travel to the US for ABA therapy. Thich Nhat Hanh (pronounced tik-not-hawn) is a world-renowned writer, scholar, spiritual leader, and Zen Buddhist monk. Since age sixteen, he has been a Buddhist monk, a peace activist, and a seeker of the way. If you have always assumed that Christianity and Buddhism are as far apart philosophically as their respective founders were geographically, you may be in for a bit of a surprise. Great commentary on both Buddhism and Christianity

I don't always like Thich Nhat Hanh's way of looking at Buddhism--he's sometimes too touchy-feely for me, and he gets a little repetitious with what I think can be interpreted as an over-emphasis on mindfulness at the apparent expense of the other seven parts of the eightfold path. Also, I'm not particularly interested in Christianity.

That said, this is a great book! By focusing on similarities and relationships between the dharma and Christian practice, to which most westerners will relate, he makes Buddhist concepts like emptiness much more "graspable" to the western mind. I imagine there are Christians who will object to some of his interpretations of Christian doctrine, but overall, it's a good study.

I facilitate a Buddhist meditation practice group in Florida, and know there are many Christians who are interested in Buddhism, meditation, etc., but don't want to give up their Christian beliefs. This book provides a good framework for integrating the two practices. I highly recommend it, and also the companion work, "Going Home: Jesus and Buddha as Brothers."

I have studied both these books and thought about the arguments in both of them for several years now. The one gives me reasons, some of which are based on the Bible, why I should think of my future as superior to those who don't believe in the same theology as myself. The other concentrates on practical techniques to be more aware of both my impermanence, how to look deeper and be more compassionate to those around me, to be more open to change (independent of theology).... But, also my permanent divine inheritance as a living gift inside of the present moment. I prefer the second.

Many Christians are quick to criticize those who teach the Buddhist and Hindu Yogic techniques of individual contemplative prayer as being un-Christian. But, after 40 years of practicing them, I am certain they are very similar to those which Jesus studied and spent a lot of time practicing when he walked on earth the for first time about 2000 years ago. One criticism is that this type of contemplative prayer does not request anything from God, it only seeks to understand how we can exist better as human beings in this present moment. Therefore, the argument goes, since we are trying to understand ourself better instead of God and since human nature is flawed in itself (something which I totally agree with) we are doomed to suffer repeated failure in these attempts. This argument does not consider the possibility that God doesn't start out as a person outside of us (in the Church or the Bible for instant) and isn't already existing inside of us helping us to overcome these failings. But, we know ourselves from our personal experience and also the Bible teaches in the book of John and elsewhere that, when we call upon Him for help (through Jesus Christ), that God does exist as a Holy Spirit in us. For too long the traditional way to follow Jesus has been to try and collect a larger group of worshippers than others and help convince ourselves that we don't need to go to the trouble of learning more about what others believe. As individuals we definitely do need groups and higher powers in order to solve problems that are difficult. The tragedy, is that in the past this has lead to many religious wars and untold suffering. For our human nature tends to try convince ourselves that the particular people outside of these groups are different, or "unsaved". It is taught that they need to be looked down on and need to be separated out from us. But, Jesus Christ himself did not do this, for he taught that we should look up on others this way. But He taught us we need to understand how others are ourselves. We need to do this so we can love them as ourselves. And, the United States of America was founded by our forefathers with a constitution of rules of civil government and society in order to create a more perfect union of all of us in order that these tragedies of egotistical religious and societal Church self-promotion might happen less often.

GREAT BOOK ON BUDDHISM AND CHRISTIANITY-DONT PASS ON IT!

Living Buddha, Living Christ is one of my top ranked "spiritual" books. Hanh does a very excellent job of explaining the
beautiful and amazing unity of Buddhism and Christianity....very deep and insightful. He also is able to express
what Christianity is all about even more deeply and better than a number of Christian writers which in and of itself
demonstrates how our spiritual selves are more alike than different in nature....a real wake up call for all of us!
I believe we are more alike than different and like Hahn I also participate in religious disciplines other than my own
and find it very satisfying and quite the "gift".

One of L'Amour's best

Fallon is the best Louis L'Amour book I have read. It contains several shootouts, brawls, and poker games in addition to other exciting plot elements. Fallon also introduces some of L'Amour's best characters and zings the reader with an unexpected twist in the climax. It is truly a must-read for anyone who enjoys westerns!

Fallon is a Remarkable Book!

With Fallon Louis L'Amour comes up with a very different main character. Fallon isn't a gunfighter or cattleman; he's a gambler and a complicated individual. I've read a great many excellent books by Louis L'Amour, and have enjoyed all of them but to be honest, they are uneven. By this I mean that some of them are much better than others.

Fallon is one that I flat out loved; one that I remember well, and of all of L'Amour's always fun to read Westerns, I think Fallon is one of the best.

I can't believe this is the first western I have read - its great!

I can't believe this was the first western I ever read, I'll defintely search out more. This is good fun right from the first paragraphs "Macon Fallon was a stranger to Seven Pines, and fortunately he was a stranger with a fast horse" - from the opening lines I was carried along.

The story follows Macon Fallon, as you know from the above, a stranger to Seven Pines who manages to upset some gamblers and escapes from the lynching - but gets himself in a bad way travelling in the dry areas without water. Just in time he sees a small wagon train and hatches a plan. There is a deserted town up behind the trail, he realises if he can get the wagoners to set up the town again he can make a pile and start a new life out west. It is kind of a scam, but he feels some guilt, they are decent people and he doesn't swindle decent people.

The hero is good fun, at once self-deprecating good humour, and next strong and able hero to the wagoners and against the local unsavoury and highly violent gang. One of the Wagoners, Ginia, an attractive young woman, smart and brave.

the story bounded along, its a short and punchy novel, the only thing I found I disliked was the long discussion of poker hands. The hero and the writing reminded me strongly of Lee Child and I wondered if Child was a L'amour fan - maybe I need to read more of this sort of stuff.

Loved it, will read more of Louis L'amour's books.

What can you learn from a smelly fishmonger!

Can creativity and enthusiasm be learned from a smelly, fishmonger?
You bet! One of the most important values I learned from this book is that it's possible to gain wisdom from some of the most unsuspecting places. Never judge a book by its cover... you could be missing out on a lot!
One thing that I will never understand about society is how easily we get trapped into ruts in our professional and personal lives. Yet, we do nothing to rectify the situation. Complaining doesn't count, my friends!
With thousands of business "How-to" books flooding the market, Fish! is a welcome change as it tackles some very important issues in a fun and easily understood manner.
In this engrossing parable, a single mom/corporate manager is given a seemingly impossible task. She is responsible for turning an office that has been described as a toxic-energy dump into an enthusiastic and productive environment.

Postive and fun to read.

This book is such an easy read and story to follow. Very motivating. This was purchased for my daughters summer reading for her 8th grade ELA class. She said it started off a bit boring but then she really enjoyed it and said it was easy to read and follow. They are writing about how they can use the ideas in their school life as opposed to work. She liked it so I went ahead and read it too. I enjoyed it as well. I think the points were well made and can see where trying to implement the ideas in work or classroom would be awesome. I am a teacher and plan to implement the ideas for my students to use and think about when school starts back in the Fall. I would highly recommend this to anyone who needs to think about motivation for work or home or anywhere. Try these simple ideas and see what you can do. It is a positive uplifting story.

Love the FISH! philosophy!

In a mandatory training I attended at our University in January 2014, the facilitators of the group presented the four principals of FISH! I loved it so much that I asked for the information about the book. Since then, I have spent time reading, rereading, and incorporating these principals in all my affairs. If I could give this book 10 stars, I would!
I like the four principals of the book, they make sense, are simple, but may not be easy to apply, it will depend on the commitment level of the leadership. Ask yourself this question: If you could work for an optimistic world class organization that cares about their people, would you? I don't know anyone who would say no to that question!
I highly recommend this book to anyone committed and willing to restore the energy and passion in their workplace environment and life! FISH! is a great philosophy that can be applied to any organization. Once implemented, sit back and watch what happens, it's nothing short of amazing!
