Not What I Expected, But Still a Worthy Addition to Fallen Series

I know a lot of readers are extremely torn about whether or not to read this book. I was torn too at first because even though I always felt Cam got the short end of the stick in the last book, I also didn't understand why, after all this time, Lauren Kate was choosing now to revisit the Fallen world. But in the end, my love for Cam won out and I realized I had to read this book. While it wasn't exactly what I was expecting, I did enjoy the novel a lot and think fans of the series will too. The story was a pretty quick read and the pacing of the novel was good. There wasn't much action except at the end, but the conclusion made the book worthwhile. There were some things I couldn't get over, and because of that I had to reduce my rating by a star, but I do think this is a must-read for fans of the Fallen series.

After finding out that Lilith, the mortal Cam fell in love with oh so long ago, is living in constant cycles of Hell, he literally makes a deal with the Devil and has 15 days to convince Lilith that he loves her and she loves him. You should be warned that this is not the same Cam we knows from the rest of the series. And to me, this is one of the downfalls of this novel. While Cam is still Cam in certain ways, and different in others, I just kept expecting a bit more from him. Obviously, his bad-boy, brooding ways weren't going to work in winning over Lilith, but he lost some of the characteristics that made me fall in love with his character in the beginning. I did greatly enjoy Lilith's character. She's tough, and I loved watching her transformation over the course of the story. However, the constant drama between her and Cam did become a bit tedious while reading, and I could have done without some of it. Regardless, I did love Lilith and Cam as a couple, especially when they first met because she wasn't swayed like the typical girls Cam surrounded himself with. She had a lot of sass and was feisty, and I loved it!

One aspect of the story that I really enjoyed was the flashbacks to Cam and Lilith's life when they met the first time in Canaan. Lauren Kate shows exactly what happened between the characters and how their history shaped their characters in the present. The little interludes where we saw these flashbacks was a great way for the reader to learn more about Cam and Lilith's past, and I thought it was a unique way for Ms. Kate to go about revealing their story.

Overall, the story wasn't exactly what I was expecting, and I did want more from Cam's story, but for the most part it was a very enjoyable read that I think will please most fans of the Fallen series. The ending is kind of left open, but it ends nicely, and it was nice for Cam to have his story all tied up.

Hugely Disappointed - not up to Lauren's usual standard

I'm breaking my own self-imposed rule by posting this 2-star review (I normally don't post unless it's 3 stars or above) but I have to make an exception on this occasion as I am so incensed after reading this book.

I'll start by saying that I'm not an uber-Fallen fan, but I did mostly enjoy the series despite the glaring plotholes and unanswered questions. I'm actually dying to see the movie when it comes out next year and I love love love Daniel Grigori. I immediately pre-ordered this book when Lauren announced the details as I was always intrigued by Cam. I thought - great, we will finally get some answers to some of the questions I had regarding his backstory and possibly an insight into what did happen with him and Luce (if anything) in the past.

What we got instead was a lame, lazy, quite obviously rushed, juvenile piece of storytelling. The blurb pretty much sums up the entire book. Honestly, there is not much more to it than that.

The only reason this is not a 1-star review is down to Lauren Kate's writing. I actually really enjoy her writing and happen to think she's very talented, and I know she can deliver better quality than this. Part of my frustration stems from this, however, the main issues were lack of worldbuilding, character development, and a plot which was practically non-existent.

And don't even get me started on Cam. This was NOT Cam. Cam, as presented in the other books, is a bad-boy with a penchant for trouble, a serious snarky mouth, and a vulnerability that he tries his best to hide. Deep-down inside, he is a good guy, and we see that through his friendships with all the other fallen angels, and his belief in their quest, despite the risks. Underneath it all, I've always suspected he just wants to be loved. In this book, he was a total watered-down version of himself, a complete and utter sap, with no backbone and minimal personality.

Lucifer was like a one-dimensional caricature of Satan. Plastering posters with stolen song lyrics around the school - seriously, Lucifer, is that the best you could come up with??

When I happened across the first Interlude, I got very excited at the prospect of discovering Lillith and Cam's original love story, but it was totally glossed over, and it was at that point that I felt like throwing my Kindle at the wall.

There was little romance either in the telling of their original love story, or the current attempt to re-win her heart, and I felt zero chemistry between them. I can't get behind a love story that just isn't credible in the slightest.

I have tons more I could say, but I'm going to leave it there. Not impressed, enough said. I suspect there are more books to come. I, for one, will not be reading them.

Not as good as fallen but still good

First thing that got me is that this book dose not have the same punch as Fallen. The connection between Cam and Lilith is not as deep as Daniel and Luncinda. It still a good story and it ties some loose ends up from Fallen.Guess I thought the story would a bit deeper than it is.
